I have this booklet from the marriage of my great grandparents January 29, 1857. They were Samuel Miller and Silence Ellis, married that day in Adamsville, Pennsylvania by the minister, John Nevin.

It makes very interesting reading, because of what it shows about the culture in those days. While the man was clearly the head of the household, he is also instructed in the proper treatment of his wife, and strong on the love he is to show. Some parts of that booklet could be applicable today, particularly regarding the daily role of Christianity in their lives. The latter part discusses the need to spend time alone and in quiet, not only to contemplate the sermon they would have heard on Sunday, but the quiet time to reflect on their lives. Not a bad admonition, applicable today!

For anyone interested in a view into the daily lives of Christians in the mid 1800s, it's wonderful reading!

Myron M. Miller

This delightful small volume offers a glimpse into the morality of a Christian marriage of the early 19th century. The standards of behavior and strict roles of husband and wife are anachronistic; it is instructive to see how greatly gender roles have changed in two hundred years. This volume would be an entertaining gift for newlyweds with a good sense of humor, or for a married couple celebrating a major anniversary.
