Victoria M. Newman is Founder of How2LoveYourCop, an operation that provides resources, support, and encouragement for police families. Married 27 years to a Chief with the California Highway Patrol, she authored A CHiP on my Shoulder - How to Love Your Cop with Attitude, a realistic but positive book to help police wives in their marriages. She now speaks and leads seminars throughout the country and abroad on police marriage. Mrs. Newman is emerging as a known Advocate for law enforcement personnel and marriages through networking, speaking for cop families to civilian audiences and partnering with departments and other like-minded organizations.

Mrs. Newman has operated a book consulting business for the past twelve years, collaborating, editing, and rewriting works on business practices, prison survival, special needs children, marriage, and a memoir from a World War II prisoner of war. She collaborated with SSG Emmett Spraktes to write Selfish Prayer: How California National Guard DUSTOFF Changed the Face of Army Medevac amid the Chaos, Carnage and Politics of War. It was released in August 2013.

Her next book, A Marriage in Progress--Tactical Support for Law Enforcement Relationships is due for release August 2015. This book is written for law enforcement officers, and is a companion book to A CHiP on my Shoulder.

I did not like this book at all. It basically says the wife must rearrange HER life and attitudes to benefit their cop husband. For example, "we cannot be too independent that we cease to need them because we married rescuers and our guys want to be needed (pg. 55)." How old fashioned and sexist is that? Women want to feel needed too and we like our independence. I think it's worse for a wife to be too dependent on their husbands. It also says that we have to voice our expectations and assumptions to our husbands to avoid miscommunications (some of the examples in the book made it seem like arguments that aroused were the wife's fault) and not to nag them too much to get stuff done because they are either too lazy or too busy to do them (women are busy too, but we get stuff done!). As a police wife, I personally gained nothing from this book. The author seems to look at police marriage through rose colored glasses. As long as the woman stays insubordinate and makes changes to her life, the marriage will work. Shoot, the husband needs to find ways to make the marriage work too! Marriage is a TEAM effort, whether or not you're in a police marriage. There needs to be a book out there with real examples that talks about what really happens behind closed doors in some police marriages.....physical, emotional, verbal abuse, police suicide, alcoholism, infidelity, divorce, depression, anxiety, even murder/suicide (cops killing their wives and then themselves). Ellen Kirschman's "I Love a Cop" is a much more realistic book for police families.

Having been married for many years to a police officer, it's easy to forget the "early days" and the loneliness, worry and resentment that plagued many of my own days and nights. Vicki's writing is true to life and her book is an easy read. One of my favorite chapters is, "Creating Your Own Normal" - once you master that, things become a bit easier. In later chapters, Vicki addresses hyper-vigilance, department politics, PTSD, raising cops' kids, trust and a host of other issues. Marriage is all about communication and commitment and A CHiP on My Shoulder has great examples and advice that would be helpful for any marriage - not just law enforcement. However, if you or anyone you know is married to a police officer, here's a handbook to give some hope and help if or when they are needed.

If you are new to the world of the LEO wife this book is a must read! So many things that I thought I was experiencing myself thinking I was crazy but after reading the book I found out that there are so many of us out there feeling the same way!!! Since my LEO is a state cop it's hard to get together with other woman in the force but after reading this my LEO and I are visiting a couple from his academy class next week even though we are hours apart! So please read!!!

As a wife of a new officer I was in need of support from ladies who get what it means "to be a wife of an officer". This book gives a lot of good advice and insight.

Although the author has some good ideas, such as opening communication, she gives the implication that nothing is more important than the cop. I would caution anyone from giving this to a new spouse of a LEO...it would scare anyone who doesn't know better. I've been with my Trooper for 22 years and this is NOT how our life is at all.

Victoria shares her wisdom and experience in being a Law Enforcement wife. This is an excellent must read for new and even "seasoned" police wives who just want and need to understand what this life is all about.

Ever wish for a manual on being a cops wife? Well this book is close to it. It puts everything in perspective and I am thankful for Mrs. Newman for sharing her trials and tribulations as well as others stories. I've even gotten my LEO to start reading it!
