I really love this show, it is one of my favorite Police Drama Shows.
Fisrt telecasted on September 15th, 1977 until July 17th, 1983 for a total of 6 seasons which I hope will be released very shortly. "CHiPs" was one of the best 30 TV shows by audience size reaching 18th on the Sept/1979 - April/1980 season with a percentage of 21.5% of all homes that had a TV were tuned to this show, and for your information the # 1 TV show was "60 Minutes" which had a percentage of 28.4%, only 6.9% difference. The cast were: *Officer Jon Baker(1977-1982).........Larry Wilcox *Officer Frank "Ponch" Poncherello....Erik Estrada *Sgt. Joe Getraer.....................Robert Pine *Officer Gene Fritz(1977-1981)........Lew Saunders *Officer Baricza(1977-1982)...........Brodie Greer *Officer Sindy Cahill(1978-1979)......Brianne Leary *Harlan(1978-1983)....................Lou Wagner *Officer Grossman.....................Paul Linke *Officer Bonnie Clark(1979-1982)......Randi Oakes *Officer Turner(1980-1982)............Michael Dorn *Officer Bobby Nelson(1982-1983)......Tom Reilly *Officer Kathy Linahan(1982-1983).....Tina Gayle *Cadet Bruce Nelson(1982-1983)........Bruce Penhall *Officer Webster(1982-1983)...........Clarence Gilyard,Jr. The First season consisted of 22 episodes and they are as follows: 01- Pilot 9/15/1977 02- Undertow 9/22/1977 03- Dog Gone 9/29/1977 04- Moving Violation 10/13/1977 05- Career Day 10/20/1977 06- Baby Food 10/27/1977 07- Taking Its Toll 11/3/1977 08- Green Thumb Burglar 11/10/1977 09- Hustle 11/24/1977 10- Highway Robbery 12/1/1977 11- Name Your Price 12/8/1977 12- Aweigh We Go 12/22/1977 13- One Two Many 1/5/1978 14- Rustling 1/12/1978 15- Surf's Up 1/19/1978 16- Vintage '54 1/26/1978 17- Hitch-Hiking Hitch 2/9/1978 18- Cry Wolf 2/16/1978 19- Crash Diet 2/23/1978 20- Rainy Day 3/2/1978 21- Crack-Up 3/9/1978 22- Flashback! 4/1/1978 I think this show deserve to be released season wise do to the fact that it is better than many shows being released. CHips was one of the coolest shows on tv from the 70's = it featured, the in vogue chemistry of the time, two good-looking guys=one blond, one brunette, (for reference-look to dukes of hazzard & starskey & hutch) who worked together as cops on motorcycles catching the bad guys and featured another kool thing in 70's tv shows= awesome car chases!! the stories were good and was fun too watch (can't say that about the tv that's on today=where we are saturated with no-shame "reality" tv with no story or originality to back it up to be considered a quality visual artform). With having charlies angels, dukes, wonder woman, the hulk and Starskey & Hutch on dvd==Chips is the final great 70's tv show to make it to DVD!!!

One of my all time favorites!,

I am really really hoping that this series comes out on dvd because I enjoyed watching this show because of all the stunts and older cars. The stunts which in my mind,do rival the stunts in Dukes of Hazzard, my other all time favorite. I cannot stress enough that they need to put this series out on dvd! If they can put 4 seasons of the dukes of hazzard out then they should definetly sell this series! After all it was already said that CHiPs was a very popular show!

Why can't TV shows STILL be this great!,

Wow, so I finally hear Chips was coming out on DVD and I thought to myself it's about time! I bought my season one and got it in the mail and let's just say VERY HAPPY!
1. The Box set.. 4 slim slipcases each include 2 disks. The holders are very well made, they keep the discs in place and nice and secure, but at the same time they are very easy to pop out, unlike some other DVD sets I have purchased in the past. I would have liked to maybe have had more liner notes about the series included, which their are very little included. All and all though I'm very pleased with the box set itself. 2. Whats on the discs? Well all time classic TV thats what. :) I sat down and watched the first episode that started it all. Whats amazing to me is that after all these years since I last seen Chips on TV when I was much younger (I'm 35 now) many of the scenes in the first episode came back to me just like BAM! The scene in which Ponches bike gets stuck in the glue lol I remember that like it was yesterday! So fun to watch and I must say, they just don't make TV this good anymore in the 2007 times. Yes there are some good shows here and there, but you always have to worry about some foul language, or some offencive scene involved. Here with Chips you have just good clean fun comedy, with a positive messege for kids today and adults as well. If you want to watch some classic TV that you will enjoy years later, as well as TV that you can have your kids enjoy for years to come. Get CHIPS! I can't wait for the other seasons. Micah.

This collection was very well done! The original pilot episode includes the extended opening sequence/music. There are six DVDs in the collection with 3 or 4 episodes per single sided DVD. Each disc contains high quality artwork. Outstanding buy for a great program!
Highly recommend this and hope they do as good a job on the following seasons and don't take a long time between seasons to release them for sale.

UP ON TOP WITH ADAM 12,
By Michael J. "UNDERDOG" (Hope Valley, RI) - See all my reviews

This was one of the greatest TV Police shows to date it's right at the top of my list along with Adam 12. Shows like Dragnet were good also, but lacked humor it was way to serious. But CHIPS and Adam 12 had their funny sides it wasn't all work and no play if you no what I mean. They also had that seventies feel and as far as i'm concerned the seventies were the best!

This show came out my first year of college. We'll get to that in just a sec. I just love big Kawis. The KZ 1000 police original B and C series bikes sounded so good. The Z type engine always got my attention with that cool sound from the straight cut spur gear on the crank that drives the transmission. Ok, tmi ha ha. I ran out and bought one as soon as used police bikes were available. Mine had only 30,000 on it and I rode that bike all over the LA area, even to the LA central CHP office where the show was filmed. Just visiting, no fix it cite. After all, I grew up in So. Cal. I've owned several KZ 1100s. "A" series, LTDs, etc. My neighbour owns an original '73 and '74 900 Z1R. The newer Bimmer R1150 RT0P is a great bike also, it's the police bike of the next generation after Kawasaki stopped building the KZ1000 P series. A faithful soldier that will be fondly remembered.
Oh yeah, on to the show. The characters work well, plots are fun and cinematography is tremendous! Cheers to John and Ponch. (Larry Wilcox, Erik Estrada) Great chemistry between the leads and Robert Pine, who played Sgt. Joe Getrare. The character reminds me of guys I've worked for in the past. Good sense of humor, down to business, and likable. My only problem with the series is that it got sillier as the seasons progressed and the disco music and beat get a little old after a while. It progressively got schmaltzy and the writing could have used some freshing up but it's still fun, great escapist TV. The pilot is the one of my favourite shows of the series. You really get to know and like the characters right off. Finally, it's on DVD, albeit first season. Looking forward to the subsequent seasons and a copy of the movie "CHiPS '99" which I have on VHS. That's also fun. Good writing, action, and lots of Kawasakis. If you love big bikes, lots of guy stuff, and pretty ladies with nice smiles, don't miss this one. Cudos to Rick Rosner. Nice shooting. This show still has wheels. Meanwhile, if you're a Chippie riding a Bimmer and a guy on a Blue BMW K 1200 GT waves, that's me. Happy riding and thanks for keeping us safe. Enjoy the show, it's worth every minute.

Irresisting arrest,

Really, when you think about it, this wasn't that great of a show. It's a tribute to bad disco music, razor-thin plots, and lack of realism. The crime of the day always ends 43 minutes into the episode. And Ponch's uniforms were always two sizes too small (even though John was the real hottie...)
But just try, I say just try to stop watching once you start, especially if you were a kid or young teen when these were first on. For those of us in the Midwest, this show represented a whole lifestyle that we knew nothing about. Plus I'm sure we did subliminally absorb the safety lessons: like never leave your keys in the ignition, or don't light a flare around a gasoline truck. What made the show great in the beginning was the chemistry between 7-Mary-3 and 4. We all know that didn't last forever, but for this season it was right on. Plus the guest stars were a hoot (especially Rosey Greer credited as "Car Killer.") My favorites so far are "Baby Food" (contaminated baby food falls onto the freeway) "Surf's Up" (the boys request temporary reassignment and end up in Malibu) "Crack Up" (John gets hurt, and Ponch has to ride with Getraer) and Flashback (where we learn more about Ponch.) Yup, just try to resist this arresting collection... |
