About the Author

David DeBatto is a former U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agent and Army instructor that served in Iraq in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to his tour in Iraq, David was an instructor in the Army Counterintelligence Agent course. While in Iraq, he functioned as a Team Leader of a Tactical Human Intelligence Team (THT) in the heart of the Sunni Triangle. His team's responsibilities included; tracking down the infamous "55 Playing Card" Iraqi fugitives, searching for WMD as well as high level Ba'ath Party and top Iraqi military leaders. His team's intelligence collection efforts lead to the capture of one of the "55" as well as several Iraqi generals, intelligence operatives and large caches of conventional weapons and top secret documents. He was medically discharged in March of 2004 after twelve years of service as a result of serious injuries suffered during an intelligence gathering mission just outside of Balad, Iraq at a location affectionately nicknamed "Mortarville" by American troops. David developed close working relationships and the trust of several top Iraqi leaders and was able, because of those relationships, to obtain valuable information not readily available to other America officials; military or civilian. He can regularly be seen giving news analysis of events in the Middle East and the Global War on Terrorism on numerous radio and television networks including; FOX NEWS, CNN, NPR MSNBC and others. David is widely quoted as a source for terrorism and national security related stories by several leading news organizations and has written articles for; The American Prospect, Salon, Vanity Fair, The New Standard and Spiegel Television in Germany.

More About the Author

Pete Nelson lives with his wife and son in Westchester, New York. He got his MFA from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1979 and has written both fiction and non-fiction for magazines, including Harpers, Playboy, Esquire, MS, Outside, The Iowa Review, National Wildlife, Glamour, Redbook. He was a columnist for Mademoiselle and a staff writer for LIVE Magazine, covering various live events including horse pulls, music festivals, dog shows, accordion camps and arm wrestling championships. Recently he was a contributing editor and feature writer for Wondertime, a Disney parenting magazine. He's published twelve young adult novels, including a six-book series about a girl named Sylvia Smith-Smith which earned him an Edgar Award nomination from the Mystery Writers of America. His young adult non-fiction WWII history, Left For Dead (Randomhouse, 2002) about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis won the 2003 Christopher award as was named to the American Library Association's 2003 top ten list. His other non-fiction titles include Real Man Tells All (Viking, 1988), Marry Like a Man (NAL, l992), That Others May Live (Crown, 2000) and Kidshape (Rutledge Hill, 2004). His novel The Christmas List was published by Rutledge Hill Press in 2004. He wrote, with former army counterintelligence agent Dave DeBatto, a four book series of military thrillers, including CI: Team Red (2005), CI: Dark Target (2006), CI: Mission Liberty (2006) and CI: Homeland Threat (2007) published by Time-Warner. A More Unbending Battle; The Harlem Hellfighters' Struggle for Democracy in WWI and Equality at Home, was published in 2009 by Basic Civitas books. His novel, I Thought You Were Dead, will be published by Algonquin in 2010. In their third novel, Dave DeBatto and Pete Nelson have wandered very far from book one indeed. This is not counterintelligence. At best, it could be considered general human intelligence collection, with more than a smidgeon of direct action and special operations thrown in. I'm really disappointed.

Particularly offensive was one phrase: when General LeDoux said he was, "Commander G-2, DOD Ops Intel." For someone who was supposed to be CI, that showed a monumental ignorance of the Army G-2, who is not a commander, and DOD Ops Intel, which doesn't exist.

After that, the book was no longer a grabber. I still finished it, but without any expectation that anything resembling actual CI would be there. It wasn't... Once I stopped looking for CI, it was a decent read, as long as one suspended actual military knowledge and just let the fiction be fiction.

But I really did expect better...

This book never really launched. It plodded along, glacially. I finished it, but I had to force myself to not pick up another book.

There's a few action scenes, and a bit of human interest. Stephen Coonts, David Hagberg, even Tom Clancy (who as late has been disappointing): sleep well at night, these guys are no threat.

This book is not quite a waste of trees, but it is close.
