Review

A gem from beginning to end… This stars the enchanting Hannelore Bey as Cinderella and any young female child will wish to be like her. We have real magic here: magic in love, in dancing, and in stage effects. Choreographer Shilling has an inventive imagination. --Bert Wechsler, Attitude Dance Magazine

The choreography and dancers are very good… enjoyable and educational… serious balletomanes may want to consider this one. --Susan McCaffrey, School Library Journal

A world of enchantment… The cast is energetic and the ensemble passages are effective. Sets and Costumes add to the picture, and the sound quality of the wonderful Prokofiev score is excellent. --Judith Otten, Pointe Magazine

I ordered this DVD thinking it was a full length performance of Prokofiev's Cinderella, but it is not. It is a delightful 31 minute condensed version conceived as a child's introduction to ballet. The dancing is fine enough to please the experienced ballet lover, however. The costumes are lavish and often quite wonderfully silly; the staging is generally simple but effective. The production was filmed some time ago and the digital remastering is not very impressive: the texture is a bit grainy and the colors are somewhat uneven in intensity. Prokofiev's music is as gorgeous and accessible as ever he intended it to be, even if drastically reduced in length. The orchestra and conductor remain unidentified. The DVD includes a summary of the story and a simple biography of Prokofiev. I think any child from age 4 or 5 to age 10 or so would enjoy this film and the others in what is apparently a series of such abbreviated ballets billed as "dance fantasies." Anyone 10 or older ought to enjoy the full ballet, if introduced to it by an enthusiastic teacher or family member.

I picked up this video to watch with my daughter, who, 10 minutes into the show said, "I hate this video". It's rather avante garde with regards to costumes; the music is dissonant, and the quality of the cinematography is poor. I cannot comment on the quality of the dancing, since I am no expert, but this will probably not appeal to younger children.

I got this to replace a VHS copy of the Berlin Comic Opera production. However, it is severely abridged version! The run time is only 31 minutes, versus the 75 minutes of the full version. This one is OK for kids (which is how it was intended) but don't buy this "Dance Fantasy" if you want the whole ballet.

There's nothing good to say about this video. Costumes are terrible, staging is terrible, videography is dark and sometimes out of focus. We turned it off and threw it away after 5 minutes. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.
