This a is a $5000 cooktop, not a thing to be taken lightly, so this will be a lengthy review. (The cooktop was not purchased through Amazon, since I had an inside track at a local wholesaler to get one of the first out, but I am putting the review here since - let's face it - everyone comes to Amazon for reviews.)

If you can afford it, and you love to cook, give serious consideration to springing for one of these things.

I first saw the Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop advertised on one of the techno-geek sites that I frequent, before they were even in production, and the idea that a cooktop would heat up ONLY under a pan, NO MATTER WHAT SHAPE the pan was, and that the heating element would actually MOVE around if you moved the pan to another location, was intriguing enough that I decided that I had to be one of the first people to test it. (not always the best idea.)

I've had it installed for a couple of months now - and ladies and gentlemen - this thing delivers.

So these are a few things that this induction cooktop can (and can't) do:

1. It will automatically fit the shape of the heating elements under the pot, pan or dutch oven to the exact shape of the pan you are using, from square to circular to oval; the display will show either a large round, small round, large oval, or double element heating element. (Anything from 3 inches to 13 inches in diameter according to the Usage guide.) Square griddles heat up in a square shape - although the little display picture can't show the square - it will show a circle. (I did test it with a square griddle. Any place the metal touches heats up just fine - no cold spots where the squared off corners hang off of a burner.)

We recently purchased this cooktop from a local store as part of our kitchen update. After reading Jule's review I don't think there is much I can add. We were used to using old fashioned electric burners and moving to induction takes a little bit of getting used to - I certainly wouldn't go back. This cooktop is amazingly fast - the demo I do for people asking is boiling water with the boost function. It is so fast that it almost seems 'wrong'. After using this for a few months, I am still very happy with it but there are a few things I wish Thermadore would change. The touch display and the ability for it to recognize the pan size / shape / location is really neat, but the display is very slow relative to old school knobs. The benefit is easy clean up, but the display, which looks and acts like a smartphone display, does not lend itself to quick action. It makes a great demo, but in practice it takes maybe 8-10 seconds for you to activate the control for a given pan, then swipe to adjust the level. A simple software change could fix this so you could just hit a value rather than swiping but it won't be as 'cool'. This can become a little annoying if you have 2 or 3 pots going and you want to make changes to all 3 in a short period of time. Also, on first power up after not using it for a while (say hours) the system has to 'boot' meaning you turn it on and have to wait for the Thermadore logo to come and go before you can get a pan going. Once it is on adding another pan is quick but this booting thing means it takes maybe 20 or 30 seconds to get your first pan going. This doesn't sound like much until you use it and realize that you can not toss a pan on for preheat, turn a knob and walk away - you have to press, wait, press, swipe.Read more ›

After months of research I decided to purchased a Thermador induction cooktop for my new home. November 2014 was the first time the appliance was used. Not more than a month later I had to have the electrical board replaced. It took quite a bit of work to get someone to come and fix it. The appliance was just turning off and stoped working. I called thermador and the thechnician they sent had no idea what he was doing, he promised to call me when the parts he needed where in. However he wrote a report saying that the cooktop was not accesible. Basically was never planning on calling me back. It was not until I called my supplier that I learned all this and requested for them to look into this matter. Finally they sent a technician of their own who replaced the electrical board. It took him 3 hours. Luckily it was still under warranty. He explained to me that this cooktop is really complex, and that not many technicians like to work on it.
Don't get me wrong, this is a nice looking cooktop and the idea of having the possibility to use any size cookware was what convinced me to get it. The truth is that this cooktop is very fidgety, It does not like heat ( yes really!) when I use a pan for longer periods of time it gets really hot and starts clicking. The level of heat then decreases in order for the appliance to cool down. Ridiculous when you have to keep a pan really hot for more than 30 minutes. Something else that annoys me is tha fact that the frame of the appliance leaves a small gap between the countertop and the cooktop and thus tons of food can get in there. Nothing I can do about that since I cannot caulk around it. Thermador says it will make the appliance heat too much. The cooktop looks big but really it only holds 4 small pans at a time.
