Good, but not good enough,
By Ramon (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CIW E-Commerce Designer Certification Bible (Hardcover)
First of all let me congratulate you for your efforts in becoming an Certified E-Commerce professional, before writting this review I thought about this book a lot, I have to tell you that I read it from cover to cover and here are my thoughts: This book is extremely long, it talks about issues that you will not get on the exam nor they will be applied in real life, the test engine to my surprise had many, many errors, they were questions that will contradict themselves or sometimes you will find 2 correct answers when the test engine was only asking for one, futhermore, some questions had the wrong answer or were asked with insufficient information, bottom line it made it more confusing. It would mixed terms like EDI, SET and SSL.Did I pass? yes, some questions in the test were addressed in the book, I also used online examcrams and free tests. You can pass the test with this book, but I think there room for improvement. Unfortunately, I cannot recommed this book, the most important chapter Security was left almost at the end, the explanation for symmetric and asymmetric encryption were very brief and doesn't explain it in a way you can understand it easily, also one of the key subjects for e-commerce today is security, which the book left for the end (when you are tired and your concentration is not at its peak) this makes it a lot more difficult. I wouldn't rely on the test engine at all, rather I will look for a more subject comprehensive and to-the-point text. I hope this comment might help in your search for an e-commerce text book and good luck!

Only book I used, and I passed!,
By "me@muhamad.org" (Palos Heights, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CIW E-Commerce Designer Certification Bible (Hardcover)
This is the only book I used to study for the E-commerce exam and I passed with an 85 percent. I think it is very adequate for the exam, but perhaps has some extra material (like Actinic Businees and so forth) that you do not need to know. This book can be a bit confusing, so I recommend that you do all the questions in the book and also all the practice questions on the CD. Here's what I did: the two nights before the exam, I reviewed every single chapter's pre-test as well as the chapter reviews and the questions at the end of the chapter. I also read all of the exam tips in each chapter (these are life savers for the exam). Make sure you do this! The night before the exam I took three out of four tests from the CD. I recommend if you have the time and are confused to do all these tests and to go over them an additional time. This process will help you focus on the priorities for the exam. Best of luck on the exam!

An example on how self- paced study books should be written,
By S Glucina (Sydney, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CIW E-Commerce Designer Certification Bible (Hardcover)
This book delivered me an 84% pass in the exam through self-paced study. This was the only resource I used other than the Internet. An excellent feature of this book is that it is crammed full of real e-commerce applications that allows you to simulate an online business to get the hang of what online commerce is all about. These are all essential elements that have to be experienced from the other side to comprehend how a successful online store should be constructed. The exam question-testing engine included in the CD is the best I have come across. This publication will feature in a prominent position on my bookcase as a comprehensive companion "oracle" to all real world E-Commerce matters for some years to come.

Prepares you well to be confused,
By Joseph Caniff (Waimanalo, Hawaii United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CIW E-Commerce Designer Certification Bible (Hardcover)
This book did a great job of presenting the material covered on the exam, and was key to my passing the test. The hardest part of the exam was what had frustrated me about the book, confusing use of terminology. I felt that a lot of the practice test questions were overly confusing and not relevant to knowing the material. But upon taking the exam, I found that they were true to the CIW format, which is also confusing to an extreme. The book guided me around what I knew was really true, to get the test questions correct according to CIW point of view. More than worth the price.

Excellent E-Commerce Resource,
By Orlando (Rolling Meadows, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews

I was very happy with the purchase of this book. The content is excellent, and it clearly points out what the important areas are for passing the CIW exam. The only things I did not like was that many topics were redundant throughout the book, and they emphasized a little too much on product-specific information. Otherwise, this book is a great resource for passing the exam and setting up your own e-commerce site.

just barely,

Read the book and took the test and passed with a 75%. A very good book however it could been stronger on the topics of SSL vs. SET and I felt it focused a bit to much on different types of software. The book explains that the ciw test is vendor neutral so I thought it could have trimmed some off that area. But still I can't complain to much. I passed.

A Great Primer and a chiropractic re-alignment for e-biz,
By "vtlozano" (Austin, Texas USA) - See all my reviews

Like most umbrella e-terms, 'e-commerce' begs for a sensible explanation--both in its parts and its whole--and this is the book to give it. What is great about the Minnicks' book is that it illuminates, without hype, how web based commerce revolutionizes business by putting mass marketing and mass exposure within the reach of small to medium-sized businesses, if--and this is the big if that the book so solidly outlines--if those businesses have done their homework. That homework includes customer privacy and security issues, taxes, and knowing the third parties on whom your site will be dependent--people like your internet service provider and payment gateway services. I'm happy to see this thorough, planning oriented approach to setting up your business on the web--especially because it puts a check on gold rush, build-it-and-they-will-come mentality that's dogged online business recently. And it is able to give this reality check while providing grounded hope for what a well planned business can do on the web. This book is like a chiropractic re-alignment for e-commerce; it puts the parts back where they belong, and where the re-integrated whole can work the way it was meant to.

After being unimpressed with some of the stale CIW materialavailable, I was pleasantly surprised with the CIW E-Commerce Bible. The book is well suited to self-study, it treats the material The book comes with a Boson practice exam and a CD The packages on the CD did not match what the book expected. The book did the job for me. After a read-through, the labs,
