Great DVD for Students,
By Cupcake Lady (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flawless Fondant (Kitchen)
I am a culinary student and I ordered this DVD to learn about fondant. I found it easy to understand and appreciated learning about the nuts and bolts, why she did things a certain way, etc. Sharon Zambito seemed to be a pleasant woman; I will use it to practice over and over and over. My only minor complaint is that she did not explain how to decorate the fondant covered cakes with accessories--like ribbons, flowers, etc...

I had the wonderful opportunity to buy all of Sharon's DVD's (except the 2 new ones) at ICES last year! I have not watched all of them, but the ones I have watched, I think are very informative.
About this fondant DVD. I have taken several classes over the year, and learned from different instructors. What I have found, is that every decorator takes what they have learned or discovered, and makes it "their own". Every person I have learned from, has very wonderful little tricks that fix something, or streamline something. Each person has nuggets of knowledge that is unique to them that they have taken from their experiences. This DVD is no different. Sharon has great nuggets of information that I have not heard from other instructors (obviously there is some of the same). And, she seems to have more "tricks" than other instructors I have learned from. The techniques she teaches about fondant work beautifully! The info to get rid of the dreaded "bulge" from around the sides...genius!!! I got a lot of wonderful info that helped me out on my fondant cakes. About Sharon's DVD's The thing I like most from these DVD's, is that I can watch the hours of instruction, and get one on one instruction (basically). There are not 20 other people asking questions and taking up class time. I am the kind of person who likes to learn the basics, and practice to perfect. I can go back and watch something if I do not remember what I saw. Another thing, Sharon is WONDERFUL at getting back to you (she will even get back to you on Amazon, how great!!!). If you have any questions, email her. After spending TONS of money taking classes, these are wonderful! You will spend a fraction of what a "cake class" costs (not Wilton, but an actual decorating class to learn more advanced decorating), and learn the same thing if not more. So far, these DVD's are great. If you are a decorator, learn from as many sources as you can, there are always new and improved ways to decorate, and different techniques from different people. Get as much knowledge as possible. These DVD's help. P.S., I do not know Sharon, so this is not a biased review. I actually am just a novice cake decorator who LOVES to learn new things, and have several learning avenues. This just happens to be one of them that I am glad I put my money into (let's face it, cake decorating is not cheap to learn!!!).

Great Instructor,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Sharon is very detailed with her instructions. I like that you get to see her do the work step by step - she's very patient. I definitely learnt what it takes to make my cake covered perfectly with fondant. She shows some techniques that I haven't seen anywhere else. The only drawback for me was that she did not show how she stacks her cake and still keeps the fondant flawless. Her DVD cover shows a stacked cake and the pictures in the DVD are all of stacked cakes, so I was expecting to learn about that. Also, Sharon, the cakes you baked for the demonstration looked perfect and dense. Would you consider sharing the recipe?
