Cute . . . for a Vampire Novel,
By "govt_atty" (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A CLASH OF FANGS (Paperback)
Rather than being scary, thrilling, or an edge of your seat thriller, "A Clash of Fangs" is best classified as a gay romance with a hint of horror. The story actually begins well, as the reader is immediately introduced to a heartless and vicious kiler who plays with his victims, while we see and hear the immense fear coursing through the victim in his last moments. It almost . . . mind you, almost . . . gave me chills. However, I felt the direction of the novel completely switched its focus to the budding romance between Steve Mitchell and his mysterious new boyfriend, Erik. I almost forgot I was dealing with a novel about deadly night stalkers! However, as that is the nature of this work, we soon find out that the handsome Erik is one of the undead. Rather than getting back on track with some frigtening tales, though, this new wrinkle just becomes a small hiccup in the love affair for our hero. Throw in Steve's catty friend Jamie, a stud cop named John, and everyone's keen interest in Chicago's "Vampire Murders", and you ultimately end up with an okay Nancy Drewish story. I did enjoy the tale. There are so few gay vampire stories that I tend to enjoy what is out there, regardless of how close it comes to the mainstream Vamp novel. This one just seemed to lack that special "something" that would push it out of its cutesy aura, into the realm of a great thrill. On that note, I would rate this 3.5 stars, but will round up as Mr. Hyttinen has a good effort here. I will be interested to see if he takes advantage of the ending and brings us a great sequel.

I love this book. I mean ADORE this book. Maybe not for the right reasons...It is hilarious. Like a B movie. It's seriously a lot of fun. I mean it. There are typos, the story line is absurd, the grammar is atrocious, the characters are ridiculous, and honestly, it is just a wonderful plethora of horrors that will amuse the casual reader! I swear to you, it might not be worth a full price, but it's definitely worth reading if you just need a laugh. I finished it in about an hour, but I'm a pretty fast reader. It's wonderful.
I'm honestly not trying to mock this book. I promise you, it is really funny. I keep it by my bed so I can read it whenever I feel down and I really went out of my way to get it. I truly love it! :D |
