This book is OK, but not nearly as good as the other REA CLEP Prep books. The authors did something odd in this one - it's as if they were writing it as a study guide or to accompany a class. There were many references to "according to your professor's specifications" and "professors ... will demand." Who cares about professors?!!! I'm studying for an exam, not trying to do better in a class.

The information provided is not very specific either. Most items are covered in general terms and will need to be researched elsewhere to get the specifics.

The computerized tests do not completely match up to the ones in the book, so if you use both as a reference this becomes more time consuming.

There were also many typos (i.e. p. 50 "a student may writes a paper" and p. 51 "the next section ... usually discusses the extant of published knowledge"). This is unacceptable in a book that is supposed to be sharpening your English/grammar skills.

I supplemented with Grammar for Dummies (good book) and also looked on the internet for rules of citing references.

Scored a 75 on the CLEP, mostly due to a strong background in this subject.

Test score 71 out of 80 - Achieved using this book, some previous study in literature analysis, and life experience.

This book does not cover everything that you might encounter on the CLEP test for Freshman College Composition. The content covered will help you become familiar with the style and format of many of the test questions. I recommend some additional research on bibliography and passage analysis to complement and round out preparing for this exam. This book is a good value for the money. Get it - it will help you in your CLEP quest.

I was disappointed in this book and especially with the software. Over half the book is practice test with answers, if you don't use the software I guess this would be ok. Of the three remaining chapters, one is about the test structure and strategy (worthwhile read); the second is an introduction to college composition (not a study guide). Only the third chapter, containing about 50 pages or 25% of the book, is an actual study guide. The study material is ok, but not great.

The software is another story. The UI is a kludge, the program is buggy, and tech support is non-responsive. There is a known issue with Windows XP and later that requires you to download and register a custom DLL. To make matters worse, the instructions they give are wrong. Good luck if you're not computer savvy. I could never get mine to print the results and have yet to receive a response from tech support. Also, there is no analysis of your results to help you focus study. Rather, you can manually review the explanations for each question in the test.

I did pass the test, but would not give much credit to this guide beyond familiarizing me with the format. If you want a quick check to see if you are ready for the test, this will help. If you don't pass the practice exam, I'd suggest taking the course rather than relying on this guide to help you study.

This book has everything I need to study for the CLEP exam. The CD for my computer also has more practice test just like the exam will have. The only thing it does not have is an essay part.

I found this book to be very helpful but not enough by itself. The cd alone makes the book worth buying though. The book assumes that you remember grammar terminolgy. Since it had been over 20 years since I had taken an English class I did not remember the terminology. I supplemented with English Grammar for Dummies. That book was very helpful. I also researched bibliographies. Here's a good site: [...]noMenuRequest. The test was harder than I expected. I almost ran out of time. There was more reading and analyzing of writing and poetry than I expected. All in all, I studied for three solid days (probably 25 hours total) and got a 66. That was enough to test me out of two English classes.

The book had much of the information needed for the actual test. Having a CD with practice tests was GREAT and helped to practice format and pacing of time! Explanations of information was also very beneficial. I was able to supplement my area of weakness as revealed by using the book.

I used this book as my primary source for studying for the Freshman College Comp CLEP. I got a 79 on the test. You need to look up a few things as they aren't covered in the book, but you will see that when you take the practice tests. This book, especially the practice tests, is a great resource for this test.

I just took College composition Modular CLEP exam and received a score of 54. FYI I am a senior majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I only took one writing class freshman year of college, and the rest of the classes during my college years were all MATH, CALCULUS, LOGICS, CIRCUITS, and more CALCULUS! So as you can imagine my English is not up to par as my Math. Also, I always hated English, I found it very boring. So as you can imagine I was not looking forward to this CLEP exam. This book really helped me refresh my mind, and gave me somewhat of an idea of how the test will be like. I didn't really "study" I just took 90 minutes everyday for 5 days and took the sample tests in the book. I'm sure if you study longer and put your mind to it more than I did, you will get a higher score. I noticed that when I took the exam some of the questions we're nothing like the REA book. It took me by surprise but nevertheless I was able to pass, so i'm freaking HAPPY!!

Some advice: Don't take too long answering the questions...you have 90 minutes for 90 questions. I ended up taking "educated guesses" at the end lol

This book was great and if I hadnt had the CD practice tests I never would have passes so handily. The test CDs help tremendously with learning the style of the tests, how to pace yourself, and the types of content to expect on the test. Every single thing in the test - except a few questions that were a little different - were in these practice tests. I passed with a 65 today - and you need a score of 50 to get credit. I will receive 6 college credits for spending the time to review these tests, and take the two practice tests AND will not have to bother taking English 101 and 102 at my school. Its the best use of a textbook I have ever had and I never would have passed without it. It is the same online format as the test.

Dont take any of these CLEP tests without having one of these books. The ones that have the CDs are the most useful. As I was leaving the testing center today, a young guy had just taken the Algebra test and he failed it. He didnt know the format of the tests, he didnt know to answer as many as possible since only the correct answers count, and he hadnt had Algebra since 8th grade. Now he cant take this again for 6 months! Bad move.

I studied from this book and took the practice tests on the included CD. My scores on the practice test were decent but I certainly got several wrong. Then I went and took both the English Comp with Essay, and the Freshman College Composition CLEPs. Out of a perfect score of 80 on the actual tests I got a 79 on each!
