This book was my only prep for the CLEP Eng Comp WITH ESSAY. (My school requires the essay.) I read the info once, skanned it a second time, and did only 2 of the practice tests.

The exam was a breeze! The best thing about this book was the practice exams because the practices showed you exactly what to expect in the CLEP format. This REA book had quite a lot more detail than was needed for this particular exam.

If you take this CLEP, watch your time. It's 50 questions in 45 minutes and involves a fair amount of reading.

I found the sample test material itself to be helpful in recognizing what to expect on the CLEP test. I concur with other reviewers - you need to read the answer key explanations because they do contain errors. It will tell you that answer "A" is correct, then go on to explain why answer "B" is the best choice. I thought I was nuts until I started reading more in depth!

It is unfortunate that what is supposed to be an instructional book contains so many inaccuracies. Other than that, I found it go be a good preparation - and I did pass the test.

I used this book ONLY to study for Freshman College Comp CLEP. I sped read the reviews, took both tests on included CD and did well. So I signed up for CLEP, took it and passed with no probs. I will say that the CLEP focused more on paragraph readings and interpretations than the REA CD. But nonetheless, I felt prepared and nothing was foreign. You should be able to pass CLEP with just this book.

This book was all I used to pass. I do agree that you have to read the answer explanations very carefully; this seems to be the key to all of the REA books. I ended up with a 74 (A) on the test and received six credits for this course. This was my forth CLEP test (see my other reviews) and I've primarily used REA study guides for all of them. I thought this test was harder than the others and barely finished within the allotted time but, if you study this book you will pass this CLEP.

My fifteen year old daughter used this CLEP book and passed with a 59; the college she is interested in attending required a 54. She felt that the "teaching notes" were very informative and and helped her focus on what would be on the test. She studied for three weeks. The greatest help was re-taking the exam after she had studied the incorrect answers. On the initial practice exams, she received a 52, 53, and 64. She improved greatly the second time around. We felt that these exams were representative of what she saw on the real test. Hope this helps!

I found this book to be quite useful as long as it is used in conjunction with other sources for preparation.To insure you are fully coverd for the test you will need to go more in depth into the things discussed in this book.Overall this book is a big help.

Basically read this book, took the exams and aced the Clep. Excellent!

I found this book to be very helpful, I would have never passed the clep exam without it. English was always my best subject, but I have not had it for so long that I forgot more of it than I thought. It has the information there for you to read and then at the end of each topic, there is an exam with the rationales. At the end of the book there are exams that are just like the clep exam. If you take the time to read it and do the questions, you should pass. I think that you need to give yourself a couple of weeks to do this, it is not something that can be done in a couple of days. It took me about 4 weeks.

The book contains numerous typos and editing mistakes. The explanations provided are often too brief to completely illuminate grammatical issues. The book uses incorrect sentences to demonstrate "how not to proceed" - a practice that has been outdated for decades. In general, this book struck me as churned out quickly and without much care and attention.
