I studied off and on for a bit before my exam, but really read the book thoroughly for around a week beforehand. With my previous knowledge and the book I did great on the exam! I only recall one question on the exam that wasn't covered in the book and it was about Maslow's hierarchy that I was already aware of. I really think it was a very good review. I've used CLEP books previously and haven't found them to be quite this good! I highly recommend this as a study guide. I used the book only and got a great grade!

I had ordered a used college Developmental Psych textbook (600 pages) and started reading it, but when the REA test prep book arrived I set the textbook aside and focused exclusively on the included 150 pages of review material. I used the practice tests to note my weaknesses and made sure that I understood all the answer choices on the questions I missed (and even some I got right). This gave me a pretty wide base to work from. I give the REA HG & D 8th edition test prep book four stars because there were a number of questions on the actual CLEP test that were not covered by the review materials. Even so, I scored a 70 out of 80 (50 is passing) and knocked out my final three required credits in two weeks for a total of about $125 including test fees and prep materials. Very cool!!!

This book has been a huge help in preparing me to take the HG&D CLEP!
I had researched may different prep tools before purchasing this, but came back to it in the end because it seemed to have the best reviews.
When I first started studying, I had my doubts about this book. I kept wondering if it would adequately prepare me for the test. However, I can now say that without a doubt, this book is enough to be your sole/main study material in preparing for the CELP. Even the highly regarded Instantcert didn't compare for me (I actually consider that to be a complete waste of money and time-- it is not at all thorough, and seems to pile on a lot of useless information).
By following this schedule in the weeks building up to the test, I was able to pass today with a 70 (=A)!!

-Week 1: I carefully read through the book, taking thorough notes all along. Took practice test 1, and scored a 72.
-Week 2: After organizing and prioritizing the information in my notes, I used various methods (notecards, charts, lists, etc.) to help me master and maintain it. I continued to read and re-read my notes during this time. Took practice test 2, scored a 76.
By this time, I was starting to notice a few inconsistencies in the text. This was my main frustration with the book, along with the fact that it's not the most organized prep book I've dealt with. These problems were easily remedied, however, by some additional reading-- I made a list of anything that was confusing to me, and researched online for clarification.

-Week 3: I re-read the book, hoping to catch anything I might have missed the first time. I continued to review, focusing on the areas that gave me any trouble. Halfway through the week, I took practice test 3, and scored a 77.

I had taken an Intro Psychology course three years ago, and this book provided both a great review of terms and concepts I had already learned and a succinct explanation of those I had not. It's particularly useful if you're on a condensed schedule. I studied for this test in four days (beginning Monday) in the way the book suggested--took the first test cold to judge how much I already knew, read through all of the chapters, took the second test to figure out my weak spots, and went back to review those before taking the third and final practice test--signed up for my test on the third day (Wednesday), then took it today (Friday) and passed easily with a 74/80. I used no other study guides and am very satisfied with my purchase.

I gave this guide 4 stars instead of 5 because I did find myself surprised by the number of questions on the test that weren't covered by the guide. These were questions about results of studies and similar you-know-it-or-your-don't facts, not concept application. (The book did a good job of covering concepts in enough depth for you to apply them in a variety of scenarios.) Ultimately, I found that anything the book had covered, I knew solidly and was very confident about, and what it didn't, I had no clue about. However, this did not significantly impact my score, so it was clearly not a huge weakness of the book.

Having had no exposure to the CLEP before, I also really appreciated the first chapter's explanation of the test and, in particular, the grading chart they provided. I would definitely recommend this guide to anyone looking to take the HG&D CLEP.

Read through all the chapters, then studied the practice test. Finished my test in about 25 minutes and passed easily.

I signed up for the test on Nov. 4th and just took it today Dec 3rd. I scored 77/80. I bought the REA book the day I signed up and have read it probably 10-12 times and have taken the 3 practice tests as well a couple of times each. The book covers every topic you need and is more than enough information to pass the test easily. I also studied a Lifespan development book from the library but I basically just used it to clarify information in the REA book that was not extremely detailed like the developmental theories. Thanks REA
