Computer-based Sociology CLEP Test,
By
This review is from: CLEP Introductory Sociology (CLEP Test Preparation) (Paperback)
I was concerned when I bought this book that the material would not be current enough to pass the new computer-based version of the test. In short...it is. I work in the IT industry and have never taken a Sociology course in my life. I bought this book, read it from front-to-back, went over the sample tests and explanations twice, and took the test. I spent three days covering the material and passed with 16 points to spare. This is the only book that I used to prepare for the test. For anyone who is contemplating whether to take this test or the class, just take the test. Good luck!

My Two Cents,
By Neil Bertrand (Lubbock, Tx United States) - See all my reviews

The book is very helpful. I studied the book for about a week and passed the Sociology CLEP with 20 points to spare. I would recommend doing some online research about the prominent names listed in the book. Some questions on the test (e.g., Emile Durkeim's 3 types of suicide)are not detailed in the study guide. The practice test were helpful and if you can score high on those, the actual test should be a breeze. All in all, a good resource.

Great Book,

This is a really good book for the Sociology CLEP test. I studied this book only and got in the 94th percentile. The practice tests in the back of the book are especially helpful. Work them at least twice and learn from your mistakes and you will do fine on the real exam.

I studied this book thoroughly and got a 99% on the CLEP Sociology test (I never had Soc. before). I wish REA would publish study guides for ALL the CLEPS!

I'd like to give this 3.5 stars...but. I ordered this recently to help me pass the Sociology CLEP exam for school. As far as the organization of the subject matter, great. Things were put into logical chapters, and it was pretty easy to read and follow. You get three tests too, which is great. But the real value is in the answer explanations, not in the text at the beginning of the book. Those are where you should focus your studying on. Many of the questions from all three practice tests were on material not really covered in the text, and many of them were statistical in nature, without a lot of information to base an answer on.
That being said, I took the Sociology CLEP after reading and testing from this book for a week, and passed easily with points to spare. I didn't think I was passing as I took it, but when my score popped up on screen, I was relieved. I'm not sure this book was the reason for my passing, as I said earlier. It seemed like a lot of the questions on the exam I took were again dealing with statistical things like current world population ratios, hypothetical reasons for people changing from one social class to another, etc., and involved either specific knowledge of ethnic and social groups or basic common sense. I like the REA CLEP guides, and have used them for all of my 5 cleps. This was one of the better reads as far as enjoyment and ease, but I don't feel it was the tool it could have been.

I bought this book because of all the positive reviews from readers who had used it to successfully pass the CLEP exam. I study this book for about a month. It was like reading toast, it was that dry. This afternoon I took my CLEP exam for Sociology and passed. I didn't use any other book or extra material. Overall the material was presented well and the order of topics/subjects was good. I was very pleased with my investment in this book.

Another passed CLEP!,

This book is THE ticket for passing this test. Read once & did the practice tests, quickly read again and reviewed practice tests, took my CLEP and got a 70 out of 80 (50 is passing). I was amazed at just how much material was on the test that was from the book. Not word for word questions (well a few) but basically the same material. A VERY cool way to do Sociology. Oh, if you're interested in a Sociology education go to another book, this one is geared to get you through the test, no more and definitely no less.

This is all you'll need!,

Like other reviewers here, I used this book only to study for my sociology CLEP test. By taking the practice exams and reading the explanations in the back of the book, I gained all the information I needed to know to pass the test. All the information in this book was revelant to what was on the test. Some practice questions from the book even appeared on the test! If you read the book and study the practice tests and explanations, you will do just fine on the CLEP.

All you need to pass,
By amazetome "S. Ward" (Silver Spring, MD) - See all my reviews

I purchased this book based on other reviews and previous experience with REA books. Once again, they came through. I studied it and took all three practice tests yesterday, passed the CLEP with the equivalent of an A today. The book doesn't cover everything they ask on the test -- another reviewer goes into good detail about other questions, and likely got me that A -- but it definitely covers enough to pass.

Passed with flying colors and then some,
This review is from: CLEP Introductory Sociology (CLEP Test Preparation) (Paperback)
Bought this sociology clep book and read it thoroughly and made my own notes, took the 3 practice tests and reviewed the results.
I also purchased the text by Richard Schaffer and reviewed the chapters which was very useful. Aced the test with a 74. Make a list of the theorists and what they proposed. I took the exam with confidence and 20 mins to spare. The text book helped me on some questions that are not in the Clep book. Schaffer has some real good definitions, charts and chapter highlights at the end of each chapter, it is awesome. After you study these two books, you can teach the class !! |
