Poorly Written,
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
I found that the book has quite a bit of typos, mispellings, and at times contradictory information. This was espeically frustrating and confusing, since preparing for a test that draws on such a wide pool of information is trying enough. I used Barron's which I thought was alright, but I have to attribute my passing the CLEP to the CLEP Comprehensive Success System, [...]. The problems on the CLEP were very similar to the problems in the three practice tests in the end of this other study guide I bought.
If you want to waste your hard earned money and precious time on a poorly written study guide, this CLEP Official Study Guide 18th Edition is the book for you. Some of the grammatical errors in this book are so outrageous, and overall, the book is just a jumbled compilation of historical facts, with no specific "plan of attack" to help you pass the CLEP.

Indispensable Resource!,
By Jake J. (Moscow, ID) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
The people who are giving this guide negative reviews are clearly missing the point. The point of this book is NOT to prepare you from scratch for the CLEP examination in question. It is more to be used to determine *IF* you are ready. You should not use the guide as your "study" book. It has no way of giving you all the material necessary for a CLEP. It's a *guide*, not a comprehensive review of the subjects in question.
Here's a proper way to use the book: 1. Read over the description of the test to see if it sounds like you understand most of what will be covered. 2. Assuming you do, take the practice test and DO NOT GUESS at any questions. If you got less than half correct, you probably need to study more before taking the test. If you get just over half correct, you probably should pass, but perhaps only barely. If you get three quarters or more correct, you almost certainly will pass with a good score. That's the formula I used for my CLEPs. If I got half or more of the questions correct, I'd take the test. If not, I'd delay and study more. **I passed 23 CLEPs without a single fail.** I am certain that I could not have done that without this book. I used it for every single test. Get this book and use it. It's worth the $20.

Official guides are never the best,
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
These official guides are never the best but are usually where people start on finding out about college exams. The best book I found can be downloaded off the getyourcollegedegree website and not only gives information on CLEP but also how to get almost your entire degree using exams. I have accumulated over 63 credits myself.

Analyzing & Interpret. Lit.,
By Adam (Toronto, Ontario) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
I used the Analyzing & Interpret. Lit. section of this book and I passed Analyzing & Interpret. Lit. CLEP by using this book alone.
The book gives one sample exam for the Analyzing & Interpret. Lit. exam with answers (no explanations). The sample exam VERY much resembled the difficulty and types of questions on the actual test.

WARNING!! Don't waste your money,
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
I took nearly all of the practice tests in this book, and it did me no good; there are no helpful guides explaining how to score well. There is absolutely no way to know how well one does on the individual tests, as there are no scoring guides. College Board has said that they don't have scoring guides for the practice tests, which illustrates the fact that this book is nothing more than a (...)

Not A Very Informative Study Guide,
By
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
This book is just a lot of questions with answers. No reference material, no how, what, where, when, or why, anywhere in this book. If you plan on taking the C.L.E.P. Test find some resource material and study that. If you just want to know the format and what the test will look like then this may be a good book for you.

WASTE OF MONEY....,
By KLA (MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
TOOK THE TEST AND FAILED BY TWO POINTS.... NONE OF THE MATERIAL IN THE BOOK HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL TEST. IN ORDER TO PASS THE SOCIAL SCIENCE/HISTORY TEST, YOU NEED GENERAL KNOWLEGE OF US HISTORY, AND SOME SOCIOLOGY. BIG WASTE OF MONEY! INSTEAD, GO TO YOUR LOCAL BOOK STORE AND FLIP THROUGH THE BOOK TO GET THE GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEST. OTHER THAN THAT YOU ARE ON YOU OWN FOR THIS TEST.

A great tool to test out of classes. Tuition is getting to high not to take some initiative.

Good for sample tests,
This review is from: CLEP Official Study Guide: 18th Edition (Paperback)
I feel like this is a good study guide but there are better ones out there- esp. for the specific tests.
