This review is from: CLEP Principles of Management w/ CD-ROM (CLEP Test Preparation) (Paperback)
I purchased this book in hopes that it would help me pass the CLEP exam. My background is in Sociology and I have only work experience to rely on, so I thought that this would help me get the basics down. In studying this book I felt good about my progress as I had done well on the practice exams. Today I went to take the test and can honestly say that about 5% of what was on the REAL test was covered in the book. There were maybe 2 or 3 questions about theorists and the rest was more practical applications. You would be better suited to use common sense to work your way through the test than to fill your head with useless information that this book provides. I did, however, pass the exam, but I don't attribute any of it to REA's book. If you don't have practical work experience in business and you need some assistance in studying for this test, I would suggest a different book. Sometimes I feel like people are paid to write good reviews to peddle a product. I have nothing to gain by this review, but I just want people to know what they are getting into it. Take it for what it's worth.

2.0 out of 5 stars Less than Ideal Preparation., June 12, 2009

I went in to take the CLEP test today, after using CLEP Principles of Management to study. I had gone over each of the sample tests at least 3 times. I had thoroughly reviewed the material. And I was in the dark through most of the test.

Some concepts that show up on the test (PERT and Critical Path, among others) aren't even mentioned in the book. While the book focuses largely on history and people who developed the science of management, the actual test's focus is completely different. Groping through new material, I was shell-shocked to take the actual test.

I've taken 7 of these CLEPs. Most of the College Board CLEP books are great. But not this one.

As it is, I barely squeaked by with a passing grade. My advice: find another book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not that difficult, December 2, 2006

I studied this guide for a couple of hours a day for a week and passed with a 71. I do have a background in management but that didn't help much. I studied a lot of material that did not end up being on the test. It is a good idea to study all of the management theorists but there were not as many questions about them as I expected. I would also recommend studying the terms found in management textbook to fill in some of the gaps in the REA guide (such as total quality management). Focus on the practice tests. Overall, it's a pretty easy test.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELSIOR STUDENTS YOU CAN CLEP THIS!, June 7, 2006

This CLEP guide hasn't been used very many times to pass the CLEP and it didn't even come out until December 20, 2005. This REA review and study guide is far and away the most accurate and in depth review of this CLEP test. To pass the Principles of Management CLEP test you will need to take both sample tests over a period of about a month until you have memorized every single question and answer. Furthermore you will need to read up on the theorists found in the first chapters of the book and you will need to have an excellent understanding of them and their theories. Just memorizing the sample tests is not enough. You will need to read and have a very good understanding of the chapter on budgeting and controlling and you will need to understand that when a manager is controlling he is watching the companies budget and expenses as well as have a good understanding of all of the management theories. If you will memorize every single question and answer you should be fine. One thing you should do to give yourself an edge would be to test yourself using the CBT sample test and then make a sheet with the numbers of the wrong answers followed by blanks and then use that to test yourself out of the book on the questions you got wrong during the CBT test. Repeat this process until you think you have achieved perfection. Yes EXCELSIOR students you can CLEP this but if you have never taken a CLEP test before you might want to take a much easier CLEP exam instead such as Principles of Marketing which contains only facts and doesn 't require that you understand and apply any management theories like the Principles of Business CLEP does.

I read this book once through. Took each of the practice tests. This is the only thing I used, and I passed the test. What more can be said.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLEP Principles of Management, July 21, 2006
This book was very helpful. The test itself had a lot of common sense questions. Pay attention to the Economists and psychologists such as Fayol, McGregor, Taylor, etc. Use the College Board's CLEP Official Study Guide, 17th Edition it helps. The practice tests will let you know what to brush-up on. I scored a 68 with only one week of part time study. CLEP tests are a great!

After taking the clep test, I didn't feel like the material in the book helped a lot. It seemed to be outdated.
