This review is from: CLMP Literary Press and Magazine Directory 2009/2010 (Paperback)
I bought the latest edition (2009/2010) without comparing it to my 2008/2009 edition. As yet, I've found no difference between the two editions other than publisher and appearance. I question a dated edition, which suggests yearly updates, when none seem to have been made. For example, the entry for POETRY still lists it as not accepting email submissions; It has for some time. For a writer who doesn't own an older edition, 2009/2010 is a useful purchase. For a writer who already owns an earlier edition, continue to use it.

This review is from: CLMP Literary Press and Magazine Directory 2009/2010 (Paperback)
This is a wonderful compendium of all the major and minor literary journals, magazines, websites and presses. While the book lists them all alphabetically - which makes it so easy to use, the index in the back also groups the journals separately by publisher content such as Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Reviews, Art, Translation, Audio and Video. There are also separate lists for publications "Accepting Unsolicited Manuscripts" and "Accepting Simultaneous Manuscripts." The book is 423 pages, so it's nice to be able to navigate it easily. Each description of a publication takes up about half of a page. There's contact information, descriptions of the magazine itself, representative authors, whether authors are paid and website addresses. Interspersed throughout the book are short interviews with twelve editors of different literary magazines ranging from Ploughshares to Bidoun to The Southern Review. These interviews, while not particularly in depth or scintillating in content, are helpful because they contrast what different editors want in submissions. For example, Ladette Randolph, the Editor-in-Chief of Ploughshares recommends that for cover letters, "the simpler the better." Yet Gloria Jacobs, Executive Director of The Feminist Press at CUNY, suggests that cover letters should convey the main essence of the piece that makes it compelling. Amazon.com is definitely the place to buy this book. Initially, I went to the CLMP website, but they were sold out of the 2008-2009 edition and said that the 2009-2010 version was coming out soon. Of course, I immediately went to Amazon where both editions were in stock. I had the book in my hands less than 24 hours later. Why buy the book when the listings are available online on the CLMP, Duotrope, or New Pages websites? Because it's really nice to sit back with a cup of coffee and be able to thumb through the entire book, dog-ear pages, and write notes or highlight entries. The price on Amazon is very reasonable, too. If you are submitting work to literary journals, this book is an invaluable resource and the best place to start!
