An interesting personal journey towards coming out,
By A Customer
This review is from: OUT OF THE BROOM CLOSET? A Guide to Revealing Your Practice of Witchcraft to Others (Paperback)
I was somewhat surprised (and even a bit disappointed) to learn that in so doing (coming out), he has never ever had negative reactions with anyone. But then again Gary has picked and chosen who he tells about his religion.. He has a Christian son and daughter in law who do not, at the time of the writing, know that he is a witch. A somewhat simple view on why he chose to "come out of the closet". I would like to have seen some discussion about those who would lose their jobs for being openly pagan: for I know of many in this time who still struggle with that. No, they would not be fired for being pagan, not officially.. the management would find another reason to let them go, but it has happened, and probably always will. Pick and choose carefully who you choose to discuss religion with, and remember always that it is not necessary for anyone in the workplace to know what you do when you pray. Bright Blessings of the Lady and Lord!

Misses the Mark,

It always strikes me odd when an unknown person's first book is an autobiography, as this book is. In any case, the author of this book is a retired person and so "comng out" in public is relatively safe, and therefore the book bears little relevance to the lives of the average peson. The author indicates he is still hiding his religion from various family members, and I'm not sure how this is supposed to inspire the reader about "coming out" in his or her own life. Odd, contradictory, and uninspired, this book misses the mark by a mile.

I found this book to be an excellent reference for me as a novice to Paganism. It is easy to understand and I got the sense the author was talking directly to me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seriously thinking about coming "out of the broom closet."

Doesn't get much better then this!,

A well written book, with a good feel of what coming out of the closet is like. For other's who wish to come out, it's a great starting point! For ones who are not so interested in coming out, still read it. It may prompt you to have a better idea of what to expect from those around you. Always rememeber... if you want people to know or not, it's the way you handle yourself, family, and friends that will really make them see you for whom you are. Let them see you, then decide later if you want to announce you are pagan, wiccan, etc. Your actions speak more loudly then your words sometimes. Especially in dealing with impressions!

"OUT" - But only to my friends in California!,

This review is from: OUT OF THE BROOM CLOSET? A Guide to Revealing Your Practice of Witchcraft to Others (Paperback)
Dull, repetitive, not much new here. Author was only "out" a year before writing the book. Only "out" to selected family and friends. No indication of 1. What is it like to come out on a larger scale - nationally, publicly. 2. Author lives in California. Gee, right -- It is really scary to be "out" in California! He keeps wondering why his friends don't continue the discussion after his initial announcement of his choice. Could it be that people are less accepting than he thinks of witches, and are uncomfortable talking with a witch? Try being a female witch who does public rituals in the rural South. Then we can discuss what it is really like to be "Out of the Broom Closet". (It is not even safe for me to sign my name to this review.) I was looking for some solid advice on how to go public. This book was not it. I feel like I wasted my money on this book. |
