Product Description

Style:Brown Switches with White LEDs

Each keycap on QuickFire TK is UV coated, making them extremely durable. This version of QuickFire TK utilizes BROWN CHERRY MX keyswitches that provide force feedback with medium resistance, requiring slightly more pressure to actuate and allowing keypresses with a bump feedback noise. Brown switches are great for those who like a bit of resistance from their keys and feedback that's less noisy than blue switches. There's full backlighting with white LEDs, 3 modes, and 5 brightness levels. NKRO through USB means every single keystroke will be registered. An embedded brown steel backplate rests underneath the keys, giving you maximum stability and durability. Additionally, the white LEDs shine off of the brown plate, creating a mesmerizing glow across the keyboard. 7 easy-access multimedia shortcut keys save you time by allowing you to quickly toggle commonly used functions such as volume and music controls. A complete numpad lets you get work done when not gaming, incorporating directional arrow keys into the numpad while maintaining the smaller, ergonomic form factor. The slim and lightweight size of QuickFire TK gives you plenty of room for your mouse and allows you to keep your shoulders squared in a comfortable position.

Disclaimer: I bought the brown switch keyboard from newegg; for some reason, Amazon won't ship it to APO--even though they shipped the blue switch TK here no problem.

I work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week in Afghanistan as chief engineer on a large software project. I don't game a helluva lot, so I'm looking at these keyboards as a professional typist...you know, of sorts. Between coding and PM documentation stuff, I spend something like 80% of my waking hours with my hands on a keyboard. I've been here for a year and a half, but for some reason investing in a keyboard that's worth a damn never once occurred to me until the last two weeks or so, when my second bog-standard dell chiclet keyboard crapped itself.

After researching the Cherry keys for a few days, I decided it would have to be between the Cherry Blues or Cherry Browns. I bought one of each, with the intention of buying a matching keyboard to whichever I preferred. It's been four days now, and I still have no idea which keyset--or even keyboard--I prefer. Let me explain the bit about "which keyboard": Amazon won't ship the QuickFire Rapid--my first choice--out here, but they shipped the QuickFire TK no problem. I always prefer ordering from Amazon, so I bought the TK with Cherry Blues first. It got here, and I loved it, but I'm not a huge fan of things lit and there are a few other minor annoyances I have with the board. So after about a week with it, I went ahead and bought the QuickFire Rapid with Cherry Browns from newegg. I'm going to review the keyboards and the switches here.

To be perfectly honest, these are both very good keyboards and I doubt anyone would be unhappy with either.

Overall I like the feel of this product (probably a great compact mechanical keyboard for Windows users), but there are some issues to be aware about when using this with a Mac.

It (mostly) works with OS X (tested with Mountain Lion, version 10.8.2). You can switch the windows (command) key and alt key locations in System Preferences, but you can't switch the keys like with the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid as they aren't the same size.

Switching between arrow keys and numpad modes:

- The numpad does not work. Pressing NUMLK has no effect. So the keyboard is stuck in the arrow key mode with PGUP, PGDOWN, HOME, END, etc. That kind of defeats the purpose of getting this keyboard and makes the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid a better buy if you don't need backlighting. There may be a workaround for this, but support did not know of one (they also said the media keys would not work which is only partially true, see below.)

Media key compatibility:

- The volume keys work
- The play/pause button works
- The stop button does not work (though play/pause kind of covers this and Apple keyboards don't have a stop key anyway)
- The prev/next buttons worked in iTunes and VLC but not Spotify. Not sure what that's about.

More key compatibility:

- PRTSC works as F13.
- SCRLK works as F14.
- PAUSE works as F15.
- There is no enter key. On Apple keyboards, FN+return works as enter.

The CM Storm Quickfire TK (Browns) is a great mechanical keyboard which has it's navigation keys combined into its numpad in order to offer a compact keyboard without sacrificing any of its functions. The keyboard has a solid weight and feels quite durable. It is a great beginning keyboard for those who are venturing into the land of MECHANICAL keyboards!

I have been using the Quickfire TK for about 2 months now and although this is a great keyboard, it does come with its faults. One MAJOR ISSUE to me (might not be for you) was the fact that this and every other Quickfire TK comes with a faulty firmware. The issue is related to the "00" key located on the numpad of the keyboard. If you are a fast typer and like to use the numpad for your numbers, you will need to avoid the "00" key like the plague. When typing rapidly with the "00" key, it will produce an extra character/number at the end of it. So for example, if I were to type "300" with the "00" key rapidly, I would end up getting "3003". The easiest way to reproduce this problem is to just hold a letter/number like "p" and then press the "00" key. You would end up getting "p00p" instead of "p00". This is a HUGE issue if you're doing data entry!!! There is no official fix for this from Cooler Master so you will be stuck with this issue until they do release one at an unknown time.

Pros:
-Plug and play, no software needed.
-Durable and sturdy
-LED backlights with different lighting options and brightness levels.
-Media hotkeys on function keys.
-Compact design while maintaining all functions a regular keyboard would have.
