Product Description

This magnetic building set is a safe and fun solution to help broaden the imagination of kids of all ages. Explore the power of magnets, develop their talent and stimulate their interest in science. There is a steel bar molded inside the magnetic sticks, which greatly increases the magnetic strength, making the sticks very strong. This is one of the major advantages of our products comparing to other cheaper items. 66 magnet sticks and 42 steel balls are included in this magnetic building set. The length of the sticks is 1.06" and the diameter is 0.25". The diameter of the sphere is 0.5".

The magnet colors are either Red+Blue+Yellow+Purple+Light Blue+Rose.

I purchased both this 108 PC from CMS magnetics, as well as a smaller 44 set from Geomag (Swiss made), and wondering about the quality differences. I'll attempt a comparison of both:

Geomag (other product): purchased Nov 9, shipped from UK, arrived Nov 27
CMS product (this one): purchased Nov 21, shipped from US, arrived Nov 27

Similarities:
- both brands are exactly (and I mean *exactly*) the same build quality. Excellent build. Balls are stainless steel. Rods are plastic with neodymium magnets on ends.

Differences:
- (only) under close observation, the only visible difference I see is the minute branding etching/numbers on the rods, and more importantly, the length of these. CMS has rods about an inch long. Geomag's were slightly over 2 inches, if I recall correctly. In my case, I found having two sets of different length actually adds versatility, but arguably with the ones from CMS, you could stick two or more rods together to add length. Also, the longer length of the Geomag rods leads to greater overall structures which are somewhat more easily "crushed" by just own weight. The smaller pieces in the CMS product call for smaller structures (higher magnet density per unit volume) and hence are more stable structures. On the downside, though, you need comparably more pieces to attain the same size of a structure.

I had intended this product for my toddler boy. I cannot realistically see him playing with this until he is older (maybe 5?). He would definitely like the toy at first (he is aged 3) but I can see all the small pieces scattered around the house (the steel balls, especially, do have a tendency to scatter) and/or showing to his 1-year-old sister, who might take the pieces to her mouth.

I bought these for my 7-yr-old son after he'd played with a much older similar set of a family friend's. The magnetic power of these pieces is INCREDIBLE (sometimes frustrating when he is trying to keep them apart!). Very fun--he plays for hours--there are enough pieces in the 108 piece set to do quite a bit with and they are easy to take places (they travel to his sister's games for entertainment on the sidelines!). Also, I might enjoy building with these as much as my son does. I highly recommend these, but would suggest them only for older kids, due to the danger of "losing" pieces if pets and small kids are around. Great toy! Going to buy more so our creations can be even bigger!

This set of magnetics building pieces is very good quality. I felt that the small magnets embedded in the ends of the plastic sticks were well anchored and didn't fear that they might pop out and be swallowed by my children or something worse. The would cling strongly to the set of steel balls that came with the kit.

PROs: Well made, stout construction, strong attraction.. reasonable price compared to some of the other magnetic building sets out there. Many things can be built in free-play, good for developing those small noodles!

CONs: They are deceivingly small, and if you only get one set, don't be surprised when your kid runs out of pieces as he is building his rendition of the death star, and asks you to order a second set. Just go ahead and do it now, get two boxes up front. Like all toys with small parts, they are easy to step on with bare feet in the middle of the night, they easily get sucked up into the vacuum cleaner, and the steel balls (non-magnetic) roll away from the play area and will hide under bookshelves and cabinets.

And as always, there is a choking hazard (even more so with magnetic toys). Even though I thought my 5 and 7 yr olds were past doing something as silly as swallowing a toy, my wife and I received a frantic call the other night from the babysitter that our 7yr old had put one of the steel balls in her mouth and had accidentally swallowed it. Youch! Scared us, we spent 15 minutes on the phone with a nurse's line trying to figure out if we should bring her in to the clinic. Turns out, she swallowed the non-magnetic ball and it should pass through uninterrupted. Biggest problems come when you swallow more than one magnetic piece and they are attracted to each other, inside of you. Bad news. But as always, this threat is present with many toys comprised of small pieces.

I hope you find my review helpful, best of luck shopping!!

My son received something similar for this 7th birthday. Unfortunately, there were only a few magnetic balls and pins. I wanted to order another set as we couldn't build anything too big and it didn't work when I tried building something while he was also building. We ended up stealing from each other! This set has slightly smaller balls and pins, but works perfectly! My son pulls out the box occasionally and builds something. Last night I was shown a flower, space ship and a couple cars. He loves the set and I can see it lasting for a long time. Now I want a set to play with too!

I bought this for my 10 year old with pretty severe ADHD. It's the first thing I can remember in years in which he hasn't lost interest quickly! Usually the new things he gets for birthdays and Christmas excite him on that day only. He rarely goes back to them later. But this set, he pulled out every day for over a week, designing new structures, creating buildings, animals, and more. The strength of the magnets amazes him; sometimes he just picks one up and starts hanging sticks and magnets from it in a straight line to see how many it can hold before the line falls.

It's a great toy for creative thinking, learning about magnetism, and something quiet yet hands-on to keep kids busy when sitting still just isn't an option.
