I have used this extension for 7 different bowl projects and found it to be quite reliable. I had no vibration problems and my 2.25hp router handled the bowl bit and extention without problems. I would recommend this product without reservation.

I had previously purchased an economy unit made in China that had .004 to .006 runout and would cause major vibration when running at 10,000 RPM. This CMT adapter ran smooth even at higher RPM's with very minimal runout.

Too large to go with Freud dish carving bit,

Bought this extension to use with a Freud bearing dish carving bit. The bearing on this is larger than the one on the bit, so you cannot go deeper than the bit will extend out of the extension. Extension is fine, but will not work with the Amazon recommended Freud bit. Buy a matching set from the same manufacturer.

Cmt item is well made- quality of materials. Have used it with several 1/2" bits, only caution is that you must ensure the bits are firmly tightened before routing. The extension collet works well- however the size of the top nut doesn't allow for close routing when the fastening nut is exposed above the router table. Otherwise the collet extension makes for a good addition to router table and bit performance.

I bought this collet extension to do deep plunge cuts. When you pick it up for the first time you realize why it cost this much. It is heavy and machined precisely. It firmly holds the router bit and there is no vibration from the extra weight.

too far down,

I have a table mounted plunge router, with a lift. It is a pain to change bits. The extension made it possible to make above table changes. The problem for me was it was too long down the shafts. The router vibrated badly, then it seized up on the plunge shafts ?. The collet was running true, i ran a dial indicator on it. It just moves the router too far down the shafts. Took it off and the lift quit jamming and no vibration. The router is an Hitachi 12MV and i notice the shaft guides are shorter than some brands ??.

As this product will hold a fairly heavy router bit spinning at 16,000 rpm, I would have thought they could have printed the safety instructions in english. Four other languages, but not english.

Risky Business,
This review is from: CMT 796.001.00 Router Collet Extension 1/2-Inch (Tools & Home Improvement)
Using an extension on a shaft spinning at 15 to 20K+ RPM is a 'high-risk' operation. Even with a perfectly balanced adapter, the increase in the length of the shaft will place a greater lateral load on the bearings and the shaft, possibly resulting in a catastrophic failure (think 'ballistic'). Every router I've ever owned (6 or more) or used is designed for wrench access from the side not from the bottom (or 'top' in an inverted position). Your router table should allow this access negating the need for an extension (unless the base plate is not flush with the tabletop). If you must use an adapter make sure it's quality tool and use only a very sharp bit.
