Hopefully the product was just defective.

This is a very very bright light for night vision cameras, that can use a 850nm IR illuminator/emitter.

Well constructed 850 nm (wavelength) IR "floodlight."

Installation Note/Consideration: The AC/DC adapter is not the typical "wall wart" type (at the plug end of the power cord) - this one has a 2-prong 120vAC to 12vDC 3amp in-line rectangular adapter (dimensions 1.25"x1.5"x4.25") - what you'd typically have with a laptop computer. It also comes with a power connector that can be wired directly to a 12vDC source in lieu of the 120vAC adapter.

A) Any reviewers reporting this product as one-star/or stating it "doesn't work" with their camera - likely have cameras of incompatible design (e.g. 940nm IR camera with an 850 NM IR illuminator, or vice versa.).

*--> Before purchasing, you need to check your IR capable camera's specifications and closely "match" the Illuminator wavelength with your camera(s) wavelength. The images sensors in cameras are designed for specific frequencies ranges and are more/less sensitive to frequencies outside a design range. If you use an illuminator outside of or on the edge of your design spec, your illuminator will be less effective with your camera, and thus you'll need either more iluminator power, or a more compatible r frequency, so it's best they be closely matched.

B) Regarding reviewer comments about this illuminator being visible to the "bad guys" please note:

1) 850nm illuminators in the dark, will emit a clearly visible glow to the naked eye - appearing as a dim red glow (in the dark).

2) 950nm illuminators in the dark, using so called "covert/stealth LEDs" are much less visible to the naked eye - typically appearing as a very very dim purple glow - so they are much harder to see.

I've uploaded images of these at night, along with the regular daytime image. If you find this helpful, please mark the review as helpful.

The beam is fairly focussed (see images).

I recently switched out my front yard camera from a Foscam to a Y-cam Bullet. The only advantage the Foscam had was better IR illumination. Once I changed the camera out, I could no longer see to my mailbox at night, and it's not that far away. With this illuminator, I can actually see all the way across the street. My neighbor's garage doors and fence are now visible at night on the camera, which was not true before even with the Foscam's superior illumination. This illuminator does not do much of anything for my Panasonic PTZ dome camera, though. Your camera must be sensitive to IR for this illuminator to work for you.

I purchased the shorter range 200-300 foot IR floods and needed one that is longer range so I purchased this unit and it, like the others, works great. As with all IR illuminators, the distances are very optimistic on how far they will effectively illuminate, so if you need to illuminate out to about 300' then this one should work for you. Not sure it will go 400'. I wouldn't bet on it.

One very nice thing about these illuminators (both the shorter range and this long range unit) is that they have a very wide area of illumination. Most illuminators are tightly focused IR spotlights that leave a hot spot of light and also leave dark edges. These work like flood lights, not like spot lights. The beam spread is probably 60-degrees which gives a nice wide field of view.

The cases are heavy duty aluminum with a strong, secure, adjustable mount. The finish on the cases appears to be near automotive quality paint, but it may be power coated? In any case the finish is very good and I expect these to be weather proof for many years.

This is a very very bright light for night vision cameras, that can use a 850nm IR illuminator/emitter.

I emailed my manufacturers Tech Support to find out if I needed a 850nm, or the 940nm emitter.
There reply said my cameras were designed to see IR between 820nm and 870nm, so the 850nm emitter would work perfectly for my needs, and they added that my cameras would not see the 940nm emitter, since thats outside of it's IR optical range.

As I said, this one is Very Bright, and I do really like the enclosure, being rated IP66, means it's dust tight/proof, and can take high pressure water jets, from all angles.
But don't mistake that for being water proof! If it was rated IP68, or IP69, that would be water proof.
The first digit indicates it's resistance to dust, the last digit is the indicator of it's water resistance.
You can find that info online in various places. Also under commercial code enclosures.

I only have 1 problem with this product, and it's not a big deal to me, so I didn't take any stars away from it's rating.
It's regarding the hardware & design of the hardware.
The enclosure is made of cast aluminum, and has a top notch finish applied to it.
But cast aluminum does NOT hold tight and thin threaded screw hardware.
With a very very minimum amount of torque, the screw that holds the fixture on the elbow joint, that has teeth on both halves, for adjustments, it immediately stripped. I'm talking about just a snugging up of the screw, not even considering tightening it yet, because I was checking the angle of the light.
The screw itself is made of extremely cheap and soft metal, and it was threaded very fine.
