Rules and Code - A great combo,
By ut6e@rz.uni-karlsruhe.de (Karlsruhe, Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The CODE: Time Tested Secrets for Getting What You Want from Women- Without Marrying Them! (Paperback)
"The Rules" and "The Code" are most definitely two of the funniest books on relationships in the marketplace today. Anyone within a mature and relaxed frame of mind will probably have the time of his life reading them. Personally, I liked the discouraging answers to "Do I look fat?" best. "Where are the other two tenors?" had me rolling on the floor and laughing. As always, there are several layers to each of these books. On the surface, they appear humorous to most adults - they ignore the fact that different people have different personalities, that putting up a facade will only result in your partner loving a facade instead of you as a person and that following a pattern of behaviour obviously strongly favours certain (not necessarily desirable) classes of potential partners. Breaking the eggshell of superficiality, many positive aspects of both these books may be found. Like any religion, The Code and The Rules each form an amusing mix of vital guidelines or essence (Respect yourself etc.), and sticky, gooey nonsense. It is usually the nonsense that captures the disciples' minds. Interestingly enough, both volumes seem to have found a following outside Salt Lake City. Which only proves mankinds general capacity to believe. Advancing even further, the young chicken's heartbeat becomes audible. The ancient Chinese author Sun Tzu once wrote: "Know the enemy." A general knowledge of tactics is invaluable, be it to play by them and win somebody on their terms or to recognize and evade suchlike mind-games early on. Both these books contain interesting information on tendencies of behaviour in the opposit sex. Different goals - be they short-term or long-term, profound or shallow - demand different actions. Remember: knowledge is power, but your behaviour reflects your ethics.

WARNING: Not for the politically correct,

First, read "The Rules." Then, before opening this book, place tongue firmly in cheek, make sure the eyeballs are free to roll around in their sockets, settle back and enjoy. "Rules" girls who are afraid these guys have encroached on their turf can rest easy. No "Rules" girl or "Code" guy would ever get past the first date, if there even WAS a first date. This book is an SNL-like parody of "The Rules," and should be taken as such. In that light, it's a hoot in some places, a bore in others. Fortunately, it's short; about a 3-hour read.

more funny than helpful,

This is more of a humor book than anything else. The authors' desire to be funny kind of gets in the way. It's too New York for the typical person.Still it makes a number of helpful points. I think women really do love a guy they can't pin down.

Late, but just on time,

I guess this book came out a while ago, but I just stumbled upon it after a friend mentioned it. Anyway, it is darn near the funniest thing I've read on relationships and even helpful, in a weird sort of way. laugh out loud funny and true to the way men and women treat each other. if people were able to laugh at themselves like this book it might make the battle of the sexes less dangerous. highly recommended...for a laugh and for a first date

Great Book. Read this book and get your priorities on how to deal with women straight. (unless you're 75 or so and ready for a family). Sometimes the writers use a little too much big-city bluff, but always very funny. Not a self-help book with pickup lines - after reading this book you'll have the right mind-set: you won't need the cheesy advice and prefab lines.

This book was a tolerable way to spend a few hours, and a moderately good send-up of the whole self-help industry. (Chapter 1 was particular effective in getting across the "Live the book, breathe the book" tone of "The Rules"). But it is worth pointing out (particularly for the "007" reviewer who seemed to think this book was tops) that it IS meant to be humorous! Take this book seriously, and you will not only completely ruin any love life you had, but be exposed to any familiar with it as a major fool! Good for those who may be tempted to take self-help books too seriously to get a sense of perspective!

First, let us consider the subject matter and not the specific content of the book. There is indeed a market for these "secrets". Think about that for a moment. What a sad commentary of what we have become as a society. We now live in a time where too many women have been hurt by too many men, and yet there are still books like this being sought-after, written, bought, and sold. This is not the forum to debate whether this class of published "advice" for men is a cause or merely a symptom of one of the greatest ills of our day: men who fear commitment, but are still willing to take what is not theirs. However, few could convincingly argue that this work will help any woman find a man she can trust or that will help any man be worthy of a woman's trust. Secondly, this book is simply a poor piece of literature. It is not well written. I give it a generous 3 out ot 10 only because there are a few books out there that are actually worse. Still, few are more damaging or damning to anyone who would use it as serious reading material. Frankly, I can think of better uses for the paper.

To begin with I am a "rules girl" ( and it does work by the way :)regardless of all the remarks to the contrary- MEN DO NOT LIKE TO BE CHASED)But I digress, this book is one of the funniest things I have read in years and it is written in good fun, after all- if a man ACTUALLY did these things he would have no love life to speak of or a very poor one. Some of the hints, however are very good- especially the "double messages" these I found helpful to use on either sex :)They do work on men, also. I believe in getting as much info on the "enemies tactics: to better subdue them as possible- after all "all is fair in love and war" and everyone knows that one person is always in control of the relationship- I want to make sure it is me!:) If that sounds calculating, so be it, it's better than being a doormat. |
