Having read all of the other Nicholas Colt stories,it was great to start from the beginning. "Colt", like all of Jude Hardin's adventures is a mixture of old time detective serial, blockbuster action movie and a little 80's "Magnum P.I." thrown in for good measure. Colt himself is an extremely likable larger-than-life character, who, overcoming incredible odds with each new adventure, doesn't take himself too seriously. Supporting characters are well written and dialog moves at a quick pace - often laced with wit and humor.
I had intended on stretching this novel out over a week's vacation, but once I started I found it hard to put down and finished the first day! I will definitely be following Nicholas Colt as long as Mr. Hardin keeps him around.

I have read everything I can get my hands on by Jude Hardin and I have never been disappointed. This one is no exception! My only disappointment comes when I finish a book and have to wait for another one to become available:-)! I have spent many a night reading (when I should be sleeping)and tell myself...."just one more chapter".... I love this author and if you like this genre then I think you will too. Enjoy!!!

The private detective as a character type sure has come a long way since the pages of Black Mask. Created by Carroll John Daly, refined by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, toughened by Mickey Spillane, and personalized by Robert B. Parker, the private detective continues to be the lifeblood of the hardboiled genre. The prerequisite in the classics and other gumshoe stories popular today is that the hero be middle-aged (or a few years shy of over-the-hill) to narrate an experienced story, two-fisted to handle the violence, and an everyday person to draw a wide audience.

Everybody that loves a yarn of murder and mayhem and readers of pulp fiction will love getting to know Nicholas Colt in this prequel to Jude Hardin's crime fiction series. The narration begins in the most personable of places, over drinks in a bar and just a hint that our cynical PI knows more than you do. So keep reading. He's the survivor of a plane crash that killed his family and the other members of the rock band he fronted. Every anniversary of the crash he hits the sauce hard. Colt lives in a camper trailer (Jim Rockford is grinning with approval). Things get mixed up quick though when a nineteen-year-old college student hires Colt to find his biological father, then disappears right underneath his hungover senses.

The strengths of this mystery is that just when you think you know what's going on, you don't. Neither does Colt and it's a lightening-paced read to discover the truth from his POV. At times he does repeat himself, or tell you the facts when you'd rather be shown more details, but the story is so interesting these are minor quirks to overlook.

Mr. Hardin has added a PI to the hardboiled canon that not only meets the prerequisites, but one that also re-shapes the archetype beyond the trench coat and the fedora.

I'm looking forward to devouring the other books in this series.

Nicholas Colt is a modern day private eye who has seen better days. He dives into the bottle to drink away the memory of losing his wife and daughter, and is only a P.I. by title. He hasn't had an actual paying gig in a while. All that changes when spoiled rich kid Everett Harbaugh shows up looking for his services. Everett is looking for his birth father, and is willing to hire Colt to find him. Colt takes the case, heads into his R.V. to get cleaned up, and nods off. When he wakes up, Everett is gone...not just gone...kidnapped.

Colt's crazy case takes him on the path of a murderer, racing against a deadline before Everett winds up next on a killer's hit list. The case isn't all Sam Spade, however. Author Jude Hardin takes Colt through some humorous hijinx, too. There's Laurie, the hot bartender, Fatso, the torturous leader of a motorcycle gang, college jocks and Frat parties. His back and forth with one particular suspect involves some special sauce, sliced tires, and a run-in with a dentist.

Hardin writes Colt with a comfortable ease, pacing the story well, and mixing the serious moments with the laugh out loud ones. "Colt" is an easy read, but also an engaging one, with enough twists to keep readers satisfied throughout.

I am addicted to mysteries and thrillers. I 'm always looking for new authors who hold my interest. Jude Hardin is an amazing find. 'Colt' is a real page turner. The plot has many twists and turns, the writing is superb, and the main character sympathetic. There's wit and humor and above all incredible dramatic tension. There's a little bit if everything, which would make any reader happy. When I say this is a must read, I mean this is a must read.
Great job.

This new Jude Hardin mystery--COLT--is a quick, fun, fast-paced read. It's a surprising entry in Hardin's series of novels featuring private investigator, Nicholas Colt. Surprising because when we meet him in COLT--the new novel--the action starts three years before he first appeared in POCKET-47, the first of the series, published in early 2011. Fans may already know Nicholas Colt, but we meet him here as if he were a first-time-out-of-the-box character.

Having fallen into an alcohol riddled despair, Nicholas Colt is an unlikely private investigator. Although the trauma that pulled the rug out from under his feet happened fourteen years earlier--and we don't know exactly how deeply he plumbed the deepest depths--if there ever are legitimate excuses, this man had just such reasons. At some point, he must have tired of a life of inebriation and one day looked in a mirror. Nicholas Colt, Private Investigator, looked back. It might not be much, but it's all he has now, and he calls it a living. Because he once lost everything, he knows he doesn't need much. For all his faults and shortcomings, for all the times a reader might say, "No, Nicholas, don't do that," Nicholas Colt has legs. He's a survivor. It's no wonder he stars in a series of novels; he's too good to cut loose.

When we meet him here, Nicholas Colt appears a perfect stooge; a man who can't see beyond the next bottle of bourbon. He might seem an unlikely choice as a private investigator, but a wealthy young college student drove out to Lot 27, Joe's Fish Camp on Lake Barkley, and knocked on the door of Colt's 1964 Airstream Safari travel trailer intent on hiring him.
