I hesitated about getting this edition because some of the reviewers here mention difficult navigation but am now extremely glad I bought it. Yes, as others have noted, it has a very long, detailed, active Table of Contents which takes a lot of time to page all the way through. It is fine if you are looking for something near the beginning, like Morning Prayer, but cumbersome for anything toward the middle or end. However, there are other easy ways to navigate through the book.

First, if you use Kindle's search feature and search for the word "quick" (without the quotes), you will see numerous Quick Navigation indexes and can choose any you want: Page Numbers, Collects, Psalms, Canticles, Prefaces, Litanies, Sentences of Scripture, Confessions of Sins, Other Prayers, or Common Services. Each is an active index. If you go to the Psalms index, for example, you can select the number of any psalm and immediately arrive at it. I have bookmarked several of these indexes and can now get to them in a snap.

Another navigation option is searching for page numbers. The numbers in this Kindle edition are coordinated with those in the current standard edition. Thus, if you have access to a paper edition of the BCP but would rather read on the Kindle where you can adjust the font to a comfortable size, you can note the page number of any often-visited page in your paper edition and then search for it with Kindle's search feature. For example, Prayers and Thanksgivings starts on page 810. If you search for "p. 810"(without the quotes and with a space after the period), you arrive there in a jiffy. (I have found it is quicker to enter numbers by simultaneously pressing ALT and the appropriate letter on the top row of the Kindle keyboard than by opening the "Sym" page....) You can also choose the Quick Navigation index for Page Numbers on the Kindle and select any number to go to that page, though this particular index is a bit long because the BCP has more than 900 pages. An additional interesting feature is that page numbers, formatted in light gray, are sprinkled throughout the text, so you can see what page you are on. I have bookmarked the pages I often visit. Navigation to them is now simple.

All in all, this edition of The Book of Common Prayer quickly becomes easy and comfortable to navigate. While using the Kindle during a church service might be distracting, this edition is very nice indeed for prayer at home or while traveling. I am definitely glad I have it! Read more ›

This is the same book we use in church (1979). One person made a comment that it had the 1789 versions BUT IT DOES NOT--it just has the ratification that is on page 8 of our 1979 prayer book. SO this is just the 1979 version.

It is easy to use once you get used to it. It even has page numbers. In the table of contents is a section with just page numbers you can click on to go to the page you desire. There is also an index for each of the Psalms. I find it easy to just bookmark my most frequently used sections to bring me quickly to the section. There are also links in the section that make it easy: for example in Rite II where you do prayers of the people they give links to each of the prayers--ie form one, form two, form 3 etc and you can go right there and then hit the back button to return. Very easy!

The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the table of contents is really really lengthly and a bit confusing.

I was really happy to be able to get this, especially since I didn't take one to Afghanistan, and there aren't any Episcopal chaplains where I am. But navigation is a pain. You sort of have to guestimate where you'll land using the Kindle's Location tags. Yes, there are page numbers because the text is exactly like the book, but you can't flip to them, unless I'm missing something.

I downloaded this and returned it almost immediately. It is way to hard to navigate devotionally, on a touch anyway. It also uses the old Sunday lectionary not the RCL one that is in all new editions of the BCP 1979. The price was right but not worth the difficulties.

This Kindle edition is neither organized nor formatted like the Official Book of Common Prayer. It is nearly impossible to quickly navigate the book. As a long-time user of the Book of Common Prayer, I am completely disappointed and wish I could return this.

usability was initially a bit of a challenge. I had to develop a work-around.

This is the same Book of Common Prayer used in all Anglican/Episcopalian churches, so the content is divinely inspired. Every time I read a section of the book God reveals to me a little more of its meaning.

I spoke with the wife of our youth and young adult minister. She has a nook. Out of curiosity, I looked at the android app store and saw that there is a free Nook app. I downloaded it and saw that the Book of Common Prayer is available there (for $3.99 - there is another version that is $6.99, make sure you download the correct one). I downloaded a sample. The sample only goes to page 113, but when you click on "menu" then "go to" on the Nook app, you can go to specific pages which is a lot easier than using the work-around I list below. If you are using a Kindle app for the IPhone or the Android Phone (don't know if they have one for other platforms) and you don't think you can work with my listed work-around (I will explain below), you may want to download the Nook app and pay an extra dollar for the Book of Common Prayer on the Nook so it would be easier to turn to the different pages in church. Since I already downloaded and paid for the Kindle version, and I already figured out this work-around, I am going to stick with my Kindle version. Had I known about the Nook app and its more user-friendly interface, I probably would have downloaded it onto the Nook in the first place.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the "locations" that the Kindle assigns to the book do not correspond to the page numbers in the book which was really annoying at first - it would be difficult to follow along at church using this e-book. I did, however, develop a work-around. I made shortcuts.... I will explain how I did that. Before you read further, I must say that I do not have a Kindle - I have the Kindle App for android phones, so what you need to do for a real Kindle or the app for the IPhone may be a little different.

I quickly discovered that in the table of contents, there is a link to each and every page in the book. Set the app to the font you normally read in (I chose the largest font). Tap on "Menu", then tap on "Go To" then tap on "Location". Then Type in Location number 3488 - that will take you to the beginning of the table of contents. If you tap on any of those numbers, you will go to the corresponding page.

The first page listed is page 8. Tap on and keep your finger on the number 8 for a couple of seconds until it is highlighted - then release. When you release, a menu pops up. Tap on "Note". Then name the note - I named my note "link page 8" but the number "8" would do just fine.

Then I turned to the next Kindle page. The first page listed on that page is 80. I repeated the process to make a note for page 80 - (Location 3597). Then I repeated it for the next kindle page - the first page listed is 150 (Location 3702). Then I repeated it for the rest of the pages of the table of contents until I reached the end of the Table of Contents. It took me less than 10 minutes to program all the shortcuts.

If You need to go to a specific page in the Book of Common Prayer, Click on "Menu" then tap on "Go To" then tap on "My Notes & Marks..." The shortcuts you just entered are on that page. If I need to go to pages 8-79 in the Book of Common Prayer I click on the "page 8" link. If I need to go to page 80-149 I click on the "page 80" link. If I need to go to page 361, I go to the link I made for page 295 (which covers pages 295-364).

I was able to follow along at church with no problem yesterday using my phone instead of the book in the pew. I found it a lot easier to use the Kindle App than to try to quickly page through the different pages in the physical Book of Common Prayer.

I would give this book five stars for content, but I had to remove two stars because I had to program the app/book with this work-around to make it usable. It should come usable in the first place. Read more ›
