5.0 out of 5 stars Reducing Light Pollution -- High Power, Low Range

3.0 out of 5 stars Attract bugs and don't last very long.

I had it installed in a fixture over my front entrance. The light was on most nights for 6-8 hours. The light output was satisfactory but attracted a lot of bugs. I had to constantly clean the bugs off the fixture and the area around the fixture in the ceiling. These bulb don't last anywhere near the 10,000 hours that they are advertised to last either. I wouldn't bother wasting my money again to buy these bulbs.

These lights produce a clear, brilliant light that falls off quickly because it isn't a white light. We live out in the country and do not want to disturb our neighbor's stargazing, so having a non-white light is important to us. For city dwellers, light pollution is a natural part of city life, but living in the country allows us the chance to avoid light pollution and have a chance to stargaze out the window from bed -- a delectable luxury. A white light can be seen more than one mile away. We want only see any snakes that might be resting next to the porch. We want a bright, clear light so that we can clearly see anything near the porch for obvious safety reasons, as we live in rattle snake country.

Of course, we'd like to reduce the bug attraction, but as we installed the lights in February, we'll have to see check in the spring if we attract bugs.

Most importantly, we are using a fraction of the energy we used with the previous incandescent bulbs and can just see the porch light from the end of the half-mile driveway -- providing the perfect range of lighting.

We changed out our old CFL on our front porch because there was just a cloud of bugs around it in the evenings. After we installed this, they are virtually all gone. There are still a couple around, but they are stragglers and don't seem to be hovering around the light. We live in the Pacific Northwest if that makes any difference, as some reviewers have said it doesn't work so well for them. Might be the area they live, but it works great for us!

4.0 out of 5 stars Still gets bugs, but it is worth it, July 1, 2011

I have been using the product for a month now. Before using this, I had a standard 23w CFL in place and would get tons of bugs. Now that I am using this product, the bugs have been reduced by about 85%. It is a significant reduction, but not a complete elimination.

The amount of light is certainly less than a standard 23w CFL, but the level of light is still acceptable. The reduction in light is less than what I had expected.

I cannot comment on the bulb life...but I am hopeful it will last.

Overall, I recommend it.

As for the seller, Bulbmania, they are a disappointment. They charged me $10 just to ship the bulb to Cincinnati and it took just about a month to get it. Over priced, over charged, poor service. You can probably do better if you can fine a bulb like this elsewhere.

Local stores typically only carry 60watt-equivalent bug bulbs. I had one purchased from Home Depot in an outdoor fixture many years. Then I stepped it up to a 75-watt equivalent for the second replacement (which I acquired from 1000Bulbs-dot-com). This time I decided to step it up again to a 100watt-equivalent and I found this bulb from Bulborama here on Amazon.

I am very happy with the light output of this CFL bulb for just 25watts consumed.

The light fixture is a traditional, outdoor, wall mounted fixture with the bulb hanging "upside down" (electrical contacts pointing to the sky) with glass sides and an open bottom. I know that many CFLs do not like being mounted upside down. I'm hoping that a CFL that was built to be a bug bulb would be designed with the expectation that it would likely be mounted in this kind of fixture. The fact that the previous two bulbs lasted about 5 years each says that they can tolerate this. (Although the 60w may have lasted 6 years and the 75 watt only 4.)

We shall see how long this 100W-equivalent lasts. It gets very hot in the fixture that I have, even though it has some ventilation (the bulb is not even completely covered by the fixture's glass). As of now with an ambient temperature in the 60's/70's, the bulb gets hot enough that I cannot touch it with my bare hands for more than a second. I'm sure that in the heat of summer it will be a scorcher. Whether or not that leads to a premature death is yet to be seen.

I do wish the bulb ran cooler, which is why I'm only awarding 4 stars. But then perhaps I'm being unrealistic for a 100watt-equivalent bulb, mounted upside down in a fixture that partially encloses the bulb.

It also remains to be seen if this bulb will attract more bugs than the previous bulbs, due to the additional brightness. But of course that could simply be the nature of a brighter light source and not a failing of this particular bulb.
