This review is from: LA CONFERENCIA SECRETA DEL TOTO´S BAR (Audio CD)
The Beatles were a bit like religion in the 60s, the word (love, Rubber Soulers!) spread around the globe, pop music was changed forever. I found a great old compilation CD in 1999 called Pepperisms, featuring bands from all over the globe wearing their Sgt. Pepper influences proudly. Los Shakers, from Uruguay, had 2 songs included. Very fab, indeed. In late 2000, Big Beat Records (UK) released Por Favor!, a 32 track compilation from their 3 LPs (1965-68.) Their progression took them from the Hard Days Night/For Sale strains of the rockin' debut (with the timeless Break It All, featured on the 2nd Nuggets box from Rhino Records) clear to the majesty and mystery of this, their third and final album.
I was surprised to see their original LPs reissued on CD in 2007 (issued by EMI Argentina.) They are extremely inexpensive (less than $10.00 post paid, from South America!) I was on the fence on whether or not to purchase, as I have (the now out of print) Por Favor!. Were the stray tracks worth it? Are they legitimate issues or quasi-legal rip-offs? No reviews to go on. I am happy to report, they are fantastic, especially La Conferencia Del Toto's Bar. All three CDs include bonus cuts, which are really not too hot but interesting, nonetheless. A bunch of strange Beatles covers grace the bonuses. Who else ever recorded My Bonnie??? This 3rd CD features a faithful version of When I'm 64, quite charming, really. What makes these issues worth the plunge are the tracks excised to make Por Favor! work as a single disc. Most of the Latin sounding tracks (Los Shakers were plying their trade with Latin and jazz sounds prior to the Beatles' arrival on the scene) were skipped, but they are a revelation. Psych-tinged, exotic, tastefully and skillfully wrought. They were superb musicians and it elevates their catalog from mere copyism to supreme pop nirvana. Despite the titles appearing in Spanish, 98% of the tracks are sung in English. Apparently, the boys learned their English on the fly, phonetically. It is at once fresh and innocent, and at times downright funny. Their back story is pretty fascinating, and is worth seeking out. The liners on the 3 EMI discs are en espanol, as they are geared for the South American market. Oh, and the sound is terrific. Slightly airier in the instrumental interplay, and longer intros on many songs. Yeah, yeah yeah!
