They were consequently arrested, brought up on charges and prosecuted in a trial that ended up being nothing short of a circus. Though constantly clowning around and continuing their pranks throughout the litigation, the defendants were deadly serious in their quest for social consciousness and political reform as they protested against what they believed was an unjust war in Vietnam. No less determined to restrain their antics was Judge Julius Hoffman, thereby providing the ideal conflict that makes good theater.
