Realistic, insightful, touching, humorous and extremely entertaining. Exposes segments of our society that few know exist. Brings to light what city police deal with on a daily basis in the streets; no grand criminal conspiracies, just real life. Exceptionally talented new author with an intriguing writing style. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A cop story for a newer generation, May 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: COP: A Novel (Kindle Edition)
Considering that every police academy class consists mainly of men and women in their twenties, it seems logical that each crop of recruits comes with a cultural influence of its own. And when the rookie is of the Southern California-punker-liberal persuasion, you can expect a totally non-NYPD Blue flavor to the radio car banter on patrol.

This is a book about a Star-Wars-nerdy, Ramones-listening, tattooed San Francisco Police Acadamy candidate who has an affinity for Mel Brooks movies and comic books. The resulting flavor of Cop - A Novel is humorous, sarcastic, and irreverant. The experiences of Dougie Cohen are funny, engaging, frightening and enlightening. The psychological effects of being a new police officer in a gang ridden yet ultra liberal city provide for a story that is as frustrating as it is fascinating.

If you like tv shows like the Wire, Rescue Me and Southland, you will love this book.

Realistic view of officer's real life - an eye opener for those who have an officer friend or family member. Well written - tough but hopeful. Couldn't put it down.

I read. A lot. This is, hands down, one of the best books I have ever read. Buy it. When it comes out in print, buy it again. You will not be disappointed. I promise. Dan Silver has become my new favorite author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cop: A Novel (that I can relate to), July 30, 2010

As someone who wants to get into law enforcement I've read a lot of books about the subject, both fiction and nonfiction, but never before has the main character been one I could relate to as well as this one. This book offers a hipper perspective, representing a younger generation than many other authors. However, I would recommend this book to someone of any age, because it's witty, entertaining and yet very honest in its portrayal of a rookie cop. Despite being new to, and not being 100% comfortable with, the kindle I still tore through this book, finishing it the day after I purchased it, very hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done Mr. Silver, July 19, 2010

I loved the book and I couldn't put it down. I think it is as close as you could get to the job without actually doing it. It's a sometimes humorous look at a tough profession in one of the worst environments in America to be a Cop. Great Job Mr. Silver, Can't wait for it to come out in paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, funny, thought provoking, July 30, 2010

A must read for anyone considering going into law enforcement. A must read for friends and family of LEO officers. The tales of a unique rookie cop learning the ropes in one of the most unique cities in the world. The author's style is approachable for many different level readers, casual as well as the more discerning.

I look forward to more Dougie, and more from Mr. Silver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, factual novel from a real point of view., January 10, 2012
This review is from: COP: A Novel (Kindle Edition)
As a peace officer for 13+ years in Cali (and 4 years as a MP in the Marine Corps in Cali prior) I can say this was a very accurate, dirty, in your face rendition of both daily life and long term hardships faced by the men and women society loves to hate. It was obvious to me this was written by a beat cop who has to face the ugly truths most people would not even talk about. From changings ideals, broken relationships, and ever diminishing tolerance for the criminals and their lies to the overwhelming feelings of fighting a losing battle and substance abuse, the public gets a small taste of the price paid by law enforcement in blood, and the slow death of the soul.

I hope this becomes required reading someday in political science/social studies classes to enlighten each new group of kids to the other side of the coin. Many L/E have similar background and experience of being a little rough around the edges and not the stereotype the public has created: emotionless robots who just arrest everyone. Daniel shows that no matter the background, the job unites and educates everyone who enters it to the ways of the real world, before it slowly starts to consume them.

I've already read this book twice, it was so refreshing to read about a young rookie. I sped thru it, it was entertaining and gritty at times. I recommend Cop: A Novel to anyone in law enforcement or those hoping to get into it. I hope Daniel Silver writes more books!
