Book Description

June 16, 1999 0123555906 978-0123555908
CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) is at the center of software development for building distributed applications. Distributed applications are designed to run over a network regardless of the type of computer one uses to access the network and the application. CORBA enables software developers to create software applications by fashoning and assembling software components piece by piece. These software components are then stored and called when needed for a program to run. With this type of architecture, a software engineer can create a basic program and store it in pieces so that when a Macintosh user accesses the program, the Macintosh version will run while the Windows 98 user will run the Windows 98 version. The core software may remain the same, with different pieces designed to support the different operating systems.
The CORBA standard is defined and managed by the Object Management Group (OMG), an industry-wide consortium which develops standards for object-oriented programming and applications. It is the premier software development project of the OMG. CORBA for Real Programmers is designed for developers who may be familiar with basic CORBA requirements, rules, and procedures, but need a complete guide for learning about essential CORBA syntax and references.

n CD-ROM contains a trial version of CORBA utilities and code examples along with other freeware and shareware concerning CORBA
n Focuses on the specifics of the CORBA standard and is intended to be used as a "desk reference" rather than a tutorial

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter useless trash., July 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: CORBA for Real Programmers (Paperback)
This book is no more than a rewrite of the OMG specifications (which cost nothing) and a poor one, at that. Must be dangerously close to violating copyright rules too. Complete waste of time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Want to learn CORBA?, November 25, 1999
By
Richard Gregory (Toronto, Ontario) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CORBA for Real Programmers (Paperback)
If you bought this book to learn CORBA programming, then good luck. Most of the information seems to be from the OMG web pages. Not a single example of a CORBA implemention. This is one of those books you'll soon see for $.99 at the grocery store.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book, December 3, 1999
By
P.F.C. (Syracuse, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CORBA for Real Programmers (Paperback)
As other reviewers have pointed out, the content of this book is lacking; in addition, the organization of concepts within it is poor, and there are grammatical errors throughout. The author and proofreader should both be ashamed.
