With their faithful henchman Pedro, Hugh and David Warren, whose father was an orchid hunter, follow up his calling, and the story starts to find them voyaging up the Amazon in quest of a Black Orchid of which their father had heard rumours. In a dugout canoe they find a dying explorer who, with his last breath, spoke of "an orchid, a fortune, and a Black Emperor". The arrow which has caused his death is itself a mystery in its construction. On his body they find a rough map, and the boys decide to carry on their quest, following up its hints. It leads them to strange adventures and discoveries, several of which bear out Raleigh's incredible stories of these regions. Before long they are allies of a magnificent race of warriors - Raleigh's Amazons; they find what was the origin of the old tale of two-headed men, and eventually arrive at the legendary city of Manoa, capital of the "Country of Gold". There is trouble, however, concerning the succession to the throne, and the boys take a leading share in the fighting which eventually secures it for the rightful heir. The story moves fast from start to finish, with many a gallant exploit and hairbreadth escape, and the handling of the climax will be found specially satisfactory.
