Not Recommended,
This review is from: CPH Exam Quick Reference Review (Paperback)
This book does not provide a good context for preparing for the CPH Exam as it provides only questions and answers which may (or may not) be related to the kinds of questions found on the actual exam. More importantly, it leaves much out (e.g., references - preferably annotated, history concerning the processes of public health workforce development in general - and the CPH in particular, information specific to a diverse set of audiences, etc.).
The exam book sold by the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NPHE) - at less than half the price - is also somewhat limited. However, the NBPHE exam guide was useful to me as I prepared for the 2008 Exam. (I don't know how much the NBPHE book helped but I did pass the Exam with high scores in all six areas). Also, neither the author - nor any of the contributors - has passed the CPH; a bit disconcerting for those purporting to help others review for the exam! I would suggest that a book preparing public health professionals for the CPH Exam would include a much broader set of tools and be authored by people who have actually taken (and passed) the exam. The need for such a book is obvious and will (hopefully) be written so that people preparing for the CPH exam will have these tools made available to them. In conclusion, although being the "second to market" (after the NBPHE guide), I believe that this book is a poor investment. Although helping "break the ice" for commercial materials for CPH Exam preparation (and this is a sort of contribution), it is not a book I can recommend.

Hopefully more options will come out,
By Jackie "Jackie" (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CPH Exam Quick Reference Review (Paperback)
I didn't really like this book. There weren't many options for the exam so it was better than nothing but here's at least my experience:
I found the organization of the text confusing (Some things were broken up into subheadings but for me a lot of it was weirdly organized). The text often uses terms before defining them. The formulas & calculations are convoluted and not clear. The test answers don;t refer back to where to look and doesn't explain all answers, which is difficult if you got the question wrong and want to review or understand why you were wrong! Also I thought when it said there was a "test" that would mean there'd be a test. The test is just the questions from each section compiled in one place (with perhaps a few extras, but if you're doing the questions at the end of each section the test is redundant). So I hope future versions will be improved, but like I said it was certainly helpful compared to trying to go through old textbooks, and it did help me to prepare for the test.

Needs major editing,
By Dr. J (Rockville, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CPH Exam Quick Reference Review (Paperback)
This book is full of all kinds of mistakes. Very frustrating to work with. It seems like they went to press prematurely. Wording of some of the questions is very odd, and some of the answers are just plain wrong. Many grammar mistakes. Some sections have very complete explanations of the answers and some have no explanations, leaving the reader to just scratch his head. Some of the questions are self serving to the author since the author uses his own work as an example and cites himself as the source. It wouldn't be hard to publish a review book better than this one. I hope someone does soon, because this thing needs some competition.

I haven't read many positive reviews on this book but I got it at a great price. I would use this to supplement other study aides.

I found this book really helpful, especially the review chapters on each core subject. As I was an Epi major, I had very little knowledge about HPMN and SBS. The theories of SBS and leadership are well explained and covered everything that was asked in the exam - I did not read anything outside the book. Biostatistics is another core which is a major part of the exam. I found all statistical tests and their assumptions - useful from the exam point of view.
However, the practice questions below each chapter are easier than the actual exam. Also, the sample exam is same as the practice questions. There is no option as "All of the above" in the actual CPH exam and so you need to know the exact answer.
