I used the CRC 'Permanent Head Gasket & Block Repair with Nanotechnology' in my 1999 Cadillac SLS Northstar at 118,000 miles.

Here were my symptoms:

1. Overheating

When the outside temperature was 90 degrees, driving at highway speeds (60-70 mpg) with occasional acceleration due to passing, lane changes or slight grades would result in the temperature gauge going from the normal 12 o'clock position to 1, 2, or even 3 o'clock.

Warning messages would progress from 'Engine coolant hot' to 'AC turned off' to 'Idle engine Now' to 'Change oil'

Slowing to 45-50 mph (side roads) would allow the engine to cool enough for the temperature gauge to drop. Exiting the highway and idling the engine or shutting it off for 5 to 10 minutes was sufficient to bring the temperature back to normal.

The next morning I would need to add coolant to the overflow tank, so the pressure in the cooling system was high enough to push past the pressure cap.

When the outside temperature was lower, the same things occurred, just at different speeds.

2. Rough running when starting

After the car had been sitting for more than 4 hours, it would run rough for 2 or 3 minutes. And, when accelerating from a stop at a traffic light, the engine would not run perfectly smooth. The effect was subtle and it felt like driving over mildly rough pavement.

My regular mechanic replaced the radiator, then the cooling fans, then the thermostat and pressure cap. Each of these helped the engine run cooler longer, but did not cure the problem. He then performed a test and found evidence of combustion products in the coolant. He recommended a new engine for $7000 + installation.

My 1996 Windstar was losing coolant fast. The Ford dealer said I needed a new head gasket costing more than $1,600. I read on-line reviews of this product (most of which were good) and I thought I'd take a chance. I dropped the Windstar off at a local radiator repair shop with the bottle of K&W and went over the instructions thoroughly with the mechanic. He said he had never used this before, but was interested in trying it. I left the car with him for two days. When I picked it up he said he had followed the directions exactly and charged me $80. He also said that he thought it worked, but time would tell. I drove the Windstar for another five years and 100,000 miles without any further coolant loss or head gasket problems. It's worth a try! The End :)

I read all the reviews on this CRC head gasket sealer before buying and most of these sealers have mixed reviews. I think if you head gasket is just begining to show signs of leaking (puff of white smoke on start up or running a little warmer than usual) these sealers work better. If the head gasket has a major failure (blowing steady white smoke, engine overheated, blowing water into the oil) it may or may not work as well. Definitely worth a shot, it's a lot cheaper/easier than replacing the gasket. I used it on a older vehicle that I suspected may have a head gasket starting to go out. I followed the directions exactly and the gasket hasn't caused any problems. I have to recommend using because it did seal a leak at the top of the radiator that Alumaseal powder wasn't able to. I flushed out the engine and radiator several times after treating, but I can still see small metallic flakes in the coolant, so I think it will seal any new leaks that develop.

I am skeptical about products that make claims like this but I really did not want to throw this car away for scrap as the repair is more than the car is worth. The local "Pick & Pull" auto junk yard offered $500.00. If the car was in good running condition it would be worth about $3500.00. Ford Windstar has a known problem of warping heads and this was my problem. As a last ditch effort I purchased this product, followed the instructions to the letter and to my amazement, It worked and worked well. As of this review, I have put about 5000 miles on the engine and it's holding up just fine. Can't say how long it will last but this is much better than junking the car which is in great shape otherwise. Four stars just for being such a hassle to take engine parts off and on.
