Since the first edition of this comprehensive handbook was published ten years ago, many changes have taken place in engineering and related technologies. Now, this best-selling reference has been updated for the 21st century, providing complete coverage of classic engineering issues as well as groundbreaking new subject areas.

The second edition of The CRC Handbook of Mechanical Engineering covers every important aspect of the subject in a single volume. It continues the mission of the first edition in providing the practicing engineer in industry, government, and academia with relevant background and up-to-date information on the most important topics of modern mechanical engineering.

Coverage of traditional topics has been updated, including sections on thermodynamics, solid and fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, materials, controls, energy conversion, manufacturing and design, robotics, environmental engineering, economics and project management, patent law, and transportation. Updates to these sections include new references and information on computer technology related to the topics. This edition also includes coverage of new topics such as nanotechnology, MEMS, electronic packaging, global climate change, electric and hybrid vehicles, and bioengineering.

3.0 out of 5 stars Most recent ME handbook is of poor quality., April 15, 2005

This review is from: The CRC Handbook of Mechanical Engineering, Second Edition (Handbook Series for Mechanical Engineering) (Hardcover)
I originaly bought this book as an answer to there being no new edition of Marks' in nine years. In the table of contents resources is spelled 'resouses'. In the section on gas-turbine calculations turbine is spelled 'turine'. If these typos are typical of the quality of this book, what is the chance that an equation or parameter out of the data are incorrect? The text is mainly essay in nature providing general information but usualy not saying how to calculate or do anything.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's a better book for around the same price, August 22, 2007
This review is from: The CRC Handbook of Mechanical Engineering, Second Edition (Handbook Series for Mechanical Engineering) (Hardcover)
This book does have some formulas and calculations in it, but they tend to be rather simplistic calculations. This is a good choice if you are more interested in applications - robotics, controls, etc. - and not so interested in revisiting undergrad ME subjects in detail. Plus this book has a really nice section on electrical engineering subjects that might come up if you are an ME that has the subject matter well explained and very well illustrated. A better book for review, professional reference, and for preparing for the PE exam is "Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 12th Edition" that book along with its accompanying practice manual is a very useful combination. The two books cover a broader area of mechanical engineering and cover it better. They start with mathematics, go through basically the same undergrad ME material this book does, and then go past it with sections on law, ethics, and economics. It's not that this book is a bad book, it's just that for this much money you can do much better.
