Book Description

December 4, 2009
A guide to the disasters we are most likely to face in the coming ten years and how to prepare yourself and your home to survive them. Descriptions of the primary threats facing the world help the reader understand the nature and risk of a variety of probable events as well as the causes. From bioterrorism to extreme climate changes to cyber attacks, CRISIS covers the threat and gives step by step instructions for surviving it. Included are directions for storing and preparing food and water, decontaminating after chemical exposure, creating and surviving in a shelter, protecting technology and communication tools from cyber attacks, and preparing for natural disasters. The final chapters teach you how to put together a disaster supplies kit, supply your home for an emergency, and even prepare a quick grab backpack to keep under your bed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The need to prepare is real. Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year. Each disaster has lasting effects, both to people and property. If a disaster occurs in your community, local government and disaster-relief organizations will try to help you, but you need to be ready as well. Local responders may not be able to reach you immediately, or they may need to focus their efforts elsewhere. You should know how to respond to severe weather or any disaster that could occur in your area - hurricanes, earthquakes, extreme cold, flooding, or terrorism. You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days. This may mean providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water, and sanitation. --Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Opportunities for mass-casualty terrorist attacks using chemical, biological, or less likely, nuclear weapons will increase as technology diffuses and nuclear power (and possibly weapons) programs expand. The practical and psychological consequences of such attacks will intensify in an increasingly globalized world. --National Intelligence Council

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have a family...., January 24, 2010
This review is from: CRISIS: The Most Likely Catastrophes of the Next Decade; Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Survival (Paperback)
Even better than reading the book and putting together the preparation Livingston recommends, is the feeling of empowerment and peace of mind you get after you do it. I know now that if something happens, we're going to be okay. It might not be pleasant - toughing out the event - but I know we're prepared and we'll be okay.

This is a very worthwhile book to have. If you have a family, you'll sleep so much better putting it into action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steps to Survival, January 24, 2010
This review is from: CRISIS: The Most Likely Catastrophes of the Next Decade; Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Survival (Paperback)
Although this book won't help you build a shelter in the woods, it will assist tremendously in surviving in your own home during a catastrophe. And because we know things do occasionally go wrong, you have to rely on your own resources and smarts in an emergency. The book spends just as much time describing what some of these disasters will look like as it spends on how to prepare for them. This helps give you the motivation to get prepared and put together the disaster survival room, emergency backpack, and so on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scary or Responsible?, February 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: CRISIS: The Most Likely Catastrophes of the Next Decade; Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Survival (Paperback)
I admit I have not read much about emergency preparation and I don't have any kind of survival training, but I'm not sure if this book is intended to scare me or to just reasonable advice on "being prepared". It doesn't advocate for a stockpiling of weapons or anything like that, but what are the odds of a huge earthquake actually happening? The advice given is good, and I'll probably follow some of it, like keeping a supply of drinking water in my basement and maybe a little food. I guess if you're a really responsible person, this book will appeal to you. If you take the attitude that most things work themselves out, you probably won't get much out of this book. On the other hand, I suppose this book could save your life.
