Product Description

For FIREPLACE XTRORDINAIR models FPX36 Elite, FPX44 Elite by Travis Industries. This catalytic combustor is a STEEL honeycomb coated with platinum and palladium, elements engineered to maximize the catalytic reaction. Advantages of choosing a steel combustor over ceramic are" (1) A more durable honeycomb. Can't crack or crumble, even at highest operating temperatures, (2) Less build-up of wood ash, within the honeycomb cells. Sharp steel edges actually "cut" ash as it goes up the flue. Better air flow, less cleaning maintenance, (3) Lower "light-off" temperature. Engage your draft bypass at 100 degrees lower temperature than with ceramic honeycomb, (4) Steel heats up faster than ceramic. Recovers more usable heat from wood smoke. A worthwhile extra expenditure for better performance. Strategically placed in the smoke path inside a wood stove, the catalytic combustor literally causes smoke to burn as fuel, creating more heat from less wood. That means a wood stove can be burned slowly, transforming most energy stored in a log to the room as heat, instead of to the outside air as pollution. Measures 3.6 inches wide, 18 inches long, and 3 inches thick. A note about gaskets: Combustors may, or may not, require a gasket to ensure a good fit inside the stove. This depends on the particular stove design. If you see a gap around the edge of your combustor, that doesn't mean it's necessary to fill it with gasket. Your combustor installation doesn't have to be airtight to achieve optimal operation. The recommended Condar CatGardTM gasket for this combustor is Condar item # 1P426 (qty. 2). For your convenience, we have INCLUDED a gasket with your combustor. CatGardTM gasket expands when heated in a hot woodstove, causing the gasket to swell. Once installed in the stove and heated, CatGard can expand permanently to twice its original thickness.

My chimney sweep told me my combustor was worn out. He suggested I look around for a replacement. Since his business is 70 miles away, he told me how to replace the combustor. It was doubtful the chimney sweep would be able to come back to the house before next summer.

I found the replacement for my Fireplace XTRORDINAIR 36 Elite on Amazon. After reading another review on Amazon, I was concerned about the size of the combustor. I called Condar. I spoke with Mike Whitt, Customer Representative. He assured me the CS-453 would fit. Condar includes the correct amount of gasket material to seal around the combustor. Mike further explained all the issues I might run into during the installation. He was patient and helpful with all of my questions.

After receiving the combustor, I set the old combustor, the original that came with the fireplace, and the new combustor next to each other. They were both the exact same size.

Installation was easy, and the CatGard gasket material sealed any gap around the combustor. What a difference the new combustor has made in heat output. It has been pretty mild temperature in north Idaho so far this winter. The Fireplace XTRORDINAIR is putting out so much heat we have only started a couple fires because with only a few pieces of wood the heat output is better than previously experienced.

I am very favorably impressed with this product and the support I received from Condar.

The manufacturer, Condar, states that this item is a replacement for the the manufacturers catalytic combustor. Fortunately, I measured the OEM combustor and the Condar replacement before installation. If used like the OEM part, this part, because it is 3.5" tall, vs the OEM's 3.75" height, it would bypass significant air poluting smoke and produce much less heat and waste firewood. Both these contradict Condar recommendations. Undoubtedly the CS-453 would violate the emission limits of the federal standard without undocumented corrective action by the end user.

Besides Efficiency, Longer Burn Time, Safety, Save Money, and Reduce Air Polution, Condar literature states, IT'S THE LAW:
"Federal law requires
in all jurisdictions that
catalytic woodstoves
be maintained and
operated with
combustors to reduce
pollution over the
entire life of the
stove."
This maintenance and operation is not possible with the combustor and support provided by Condar. Condar apparently uses this statement to threaten potential customers that the customer will break the law if they do not purchase a Condar product, yet when that Condar product would violate the law, Condar will not act to remedy the violation.

I have not installed the unit and am awaiting Condar's response to corrective suggestions. This review will be updated upon Condar response. If the response does not correct air-quality issues for all future purchasers, the unit will be returned.

UPDATE: February 17, 2012
I have sent two E-mails. Condar technical and customer service have received the E-mails (read receipts) and have failed to respond. Condar's promised telephone call did not happen. I have received no response of any kind from Condar. The item will be returned.

I recommend that you avoid doing business with Condar.
