1.0 out of 5 stars CSI for Dummies, November 20, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: CSI: New York The Game (CD-ROM)
CSI:NY is a radical departure from previous CSI games, and not in a good way. The difficulty levels, fairly long and layered cases and the tricky, sometimes exasperating, search for evidence that resulted in satisfaction when you finally solved the crime have been replaced by a system that gently leads you by the hand from place to place and clue to clue.

You still search a crime scene, but it is limited to one screen shot and there is little actual evidence to find. Instead, you search for a variety of nonsensical objects represented by outlines in your inventory that have no bearing on the case and immediately disappear. Sort of CSI meets a scavenger hunt. The few real clues are also previewed in inventory so you know exactly what to look for, and processing them is simple because you are provided with only the correct tools. Of course, you don't necessarily use those tools in a normal way! For example, instead of swabbing a blood stain, you must draw an outline around it with a swab.

Another innovation is a series of "mini-games" that range from code breaking to finding differences between two like objects (and, yes, you are told how many differences to find). All of these mini-games can be solved in minutes and are easy to spot via the use of sparkling pixie dust that appears on the screen. An evaluation system consisting of gold and silver stars at the end of each case completes the childlike atmosphere. I don't know what you get if you really botch things up --- maybe a lump of coal for your Christmas stocking?

Overall, the game seems hastily and cheaply put together. The 3-D modeling and extensive video sequences from the last two CSI games has deteriorated to static characters and brief introductions that resemble animated cartoons. The cases are short and have been cut to four instead of five, though we are promised a fifth "bonus" case that can be played online in 2009. CSI:NY might be a mildly interesting diversion when it hits the bargain bin, but for now it's much more rewarding to replay your old games for free.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different than what I expected but good, November 22, 2008
By
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: CSI: New York The Game (CD-ROM)
If you like to play traditional point and click adventure games, CSI NY is not for you. If you like popular games like Mystery Case Files, Women's Murder Club, Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes, and other mystery puzzle games like those, you will enjoy this game. It just depends on what type of gamer you are. I've played both types of games, but at this point, I prefer the casual ones. My favorite part of the game is solving puzzles and interviewing witnesses, which results in the next part of the story being revealed. And the stories themselves are terrific and kept my interest until the end. Another thing I like about these types of games is how I can play for twenty minutes or so and then stop, without losing my place or having to figure out where I am in the game and what to do next when I start again. CSI NY compares very favorably to other games in this category, but it's obviously not like the previous CSI games, which I found frustrating.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lame & Boring, April 21, 2011

This review is from: CSI: New York The Game (CD-ROM)
Lame & boring sums up everything about this game.

The graphics/cartoons look like they were drawn by a 10 year old.... Lame.

The story lines are drawn out and most of it is just a seek n find game... Boring

Most of the mini games are draw a line from point a to point b, trace the stain or find the difference...... Lame and Boring.

I had just finished playing CSI 3 Dimensions of Murder and thought I would give this a try. At the time there was only 1 review and I didn't bother reading it. Boy do I wish I had. I would never had bought this game.

Save your money! Unless of course your like....... Lame and Boring!
