CSI for Dummies,
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: CSI: New York The Game (CD-ROM)
CSI:NY is a radical departure from previous CSI games, and not in a good way. The difficulty levels, fairly long and layered cases and the tricky, sometimes exasperating, search for evidence that resulted in satisfaction when you finally solved the crime have been replaced by a system that gently leads you by the hand from place to place and clue to clue.
You still search a crime scene, but it is limited to one screen shot and there is little actual evidence to find. Instead, you search for a variety of nonsensical objects represented by outlines in your inventory that have no bearing on the case and immediately disappear. Sort of CSI meets a scavenger hunt. The few real clues are also previewed in inventory so you know exactly what to look for, and processing them is simple because you are provided with only the correct tools. Of course, you don't necessarily use those tools in a normal way! For example, instead of swabbing a blood stain, you must draw an outline around it with a swab. Another innovation is a series of "mini-games" that range from code breaking to finding differences between two like objects (and, yes, you are told how many differences to find). All of these mini-games can be solved in minutes and are easy to spot via the use of sparkling pixie dust that appears on the screen. An evaluation system consisting of gold and silver stars at the end of each case completes the childlike atmosphere. I don't know what you get if you really botch things up --- maybe a lump of coal for your Christmas stocking? Overall, the game seems hastily and cheaply put together. The 3-D modeling and extensive video sequences from the last two CSI games has deteriorated to static characters and brief introductions that resemble animated cartoons. The cases are short and have been cut to four instead of five, though we are promised a fifth "bonus" case that can be played online in 2009. CSI:NY might be a mildly interesting diversion when it hits the bargain bin, but for now it's much more rewarding to replay your old games for free.

Different than what I expected but good,

If you like to play traditional point and click adventure games, CSI NY is not for you. If you like popular games like Mystery Case Files, Women's Murder Club, Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes, and other mystery puzzle games like those, you will enjoy this game. It just depends on what type of gamer you are. I've played both types of games, but at this point, I prefer the casual ones. My favorite part of the game is solving puzzles and interviewing witnesses, which results in the next part of the story being revealed. And the stories themselves are terrific and kept my interest until the end. Another thing I like about these types of games is how I can play for twenty minutes or so and then stop, without losing my place or having to figure out where I am in the game and what to do next when I start again. CSI NY compares very favorably to other games in this category, but it's obviously not like the previous CSI games, which I found frustrating.

Lame & Boring,

Lame & boring sums up everything about this game.
The graphics/cartoons look like they were drawn by a 10 year old.... Lame. The story lines are drawn out and most of it is just a seek n find game... Boring Most of the mini games are draw a line from point a to point b, trace the stain or find the difference...... Lame and Boring. I had just finished playing CSI 3 Dimensions of Murder and thought I would give this a try. At the time there was only 1 review and I didn't bother reading it. Boy do I wish I had. I would never had bought this game. Save your money! Unless of course your like....... Lame and Boring!

This CSI game was only semi like the other ones. It seemed like it was designed more for children and reminded me of the puzzles in the Highlights magazine where the concentration seemed to be more directed on finding silly things rather then solving the crime. Was very disappointed and never even finished the game due to its childlike features. This is not a reflection on the seller I purchased the game from, it is simply a review of the game.

I have played all of the previous games based on the original CSI series, and I enjoyed them very much despite their low-quality graphics and occasional simplicity. Boy, was I in for a shock when I started playing CSI:NY. If you enjoyed the other CSI games, please take it from me and DO NOT purchase this. It's basically just a "find hidden objects" game with some mini-games mixed in - things like old-school memory games and sudoku-style number puzzles. Seriously, sudoku?? What happened to, like, analyzing DNA and stuff? I feel insulted by this game.

I have them all...and I'm sorry to say, this one a little kid could handle. There is really no searching for clues and the puzzles are super easy. Started playing it today and won't be anymore! I sure hope any other CSI games are NOT like this!

I love the other CSI games but this is nothing like them. There's really no point to this game and there's very little thought involved while playing. There's no investigating...very disappointed with this game!!!! I won't be finishing it. It really deserves 0 stars but it wouldn't let me do that.

Maybe they were just trying to knock it down from a Mature to a Teen rating, but the replacment of actual clue-finding and crime-puzzle-solving with a series of matching games, "where's Waldo"-type screens and "find the difference" puzzles -- sometimes with little relation to the case -- is extremely disappointing to this player. The previous CSI games were frustrating, but rewarding. With this one, I kept hoping the case was done because I was bored with the dull puzzles. If you haven't played the other games, buy those instead of this one.

I love CSI NY and I have really enjoyed the other CSI PC games. So I ran right out to buy this one, excited as heck. Now that I am half way through it, I am very disappointed and I wish I had not spent my 30 bucks. There is almost none of the forensic type tool use as there is in the other CSI games, and the ones there are, like fingerprint comp are a joke. There are a lot of seek and find, and find the differences sections. The puzzles are laughably solvable and nothing about the game is challenging whatsoever. I'll stick with the show and sell the game on ebay.

the makers of this game should have their door kicked down in the middle of the night, dragged to the nearest shopping centre by a town mob, and be publicly hung for this crime against humanity
