If I can get it to work down the road I shall update this review accordingly.

Putting the gear box and solar panel parts together took over a half hour and they didn't snap together properly, pieces didn't fit together where they should, etc.

At first I thought the unit did not work, until I tested the solar cell with a multimeter and I tested the motor with a battery.

I got 3 of these kits for my nephews and science education that I am currently involved in. I was really excited about them, but have been disappointed when trying them out. I tried putting together one of the kits, but could never get the solar panel to get the motor moving. I held the panel very close to 100 W halogen bulb in addition to trying it outside on a sunny day with no luck. I tried components from the duplicate kits I ordered with no luck. I can not get motion out of these at all. Using my multimeter I get fairly low readings for the voltage and current output under the lamp, so low I doubt motion is possible. I even tried connecting the motor to a stronger solar panel I have as a portable charger (I know the panel works, and I understand it was a chance at all if it would run the motor and therefore was a last ditch effort) and there was no effect. I shall play some more with it when I have more time, but as of now I do not recommend this kit in any fashion.

I see a video on the top reviewer showing a device I would certainly buy, but that looks like a promotional video from a marketing company and less like a home made video, it certainly features wires not available in the kits (red and black ones). I would not comment on it regularly but I think the video is from a paid reviewer and that should really be taken into account before relying on this review to influence purchasing the product. Checking the reviewers history has 20 pages of seeming random reviews on a regular basis and every one with a 5 star rating and a specific "I recommend" line in each. Many feature videos of professional quality, but they do not appear to be from the same source.

The solar battery is not sensitive, have to put it under very strong sunshine. In China, only worth $1. the $2's toy is better than this. Do not be fooled by the images like me.

Many small parts that can get lost easy. The wire connecting the gear fell apart and I had to splice it together. My 8 year old was very frustrated and gave up. It worked few seconds and never worked again, even after I worked with replacing wires and fitting together again. Not worth the money or frustration.

Hi,

We bought this toy in order to see how someone was selling it so cheap. The toy is actually a chinese knock-off of OWI product number OWIMSK610. The chinese knockoff is inferior and very problematic. We are a reseller of OWI product and can compare this kit directly to the real OWI kit. This imitation is poorly constructed and will be a disappointment to anybody that buys it. Do yourself a favor and make sure you are buying the real kit made by OWI.

What a piece of junk. My son is 12 and I am 45 and we could not get anything to stay together.
Too flimsy...the good reviews are BS!

That solar panel is a complete joke. I'm very upset that my kids need to put the thing into direct sunlight.

The pieces do fit together ok, but the solar panel is so weak that in direct sunlight it is important to keep as flat as possible (parallel to the ground) otherwise merely turning it will cause the power to die.

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT CENTERS ON IT'S ABILITY TO GAIN POWER IN THE FIRST PLACE.

At least here is an *important* hint to help with the wires. When assembling the device, try not to have the springs push flat against something that will keep them from spreading open. You'll see this as you make it: the wires must fit between the coils of the springs, which by itself is a fairly clever design, but if the springs are pressed up against something and cannot expand you will eventually break the wires trying to force them in.

For $12.00 with shipping, it's ok... The electrical spring connectors are very hard to work with. You have to take apart the battery / motor to connect them. (I was never able to get the cable to slide into the spring without doing this.) The solar cell requires bright sun, or at least a 100 watt light bulb to run the motor. At first I thought the unit did not work, until I tested the solar cell with a multimeter and I tested the motor with a battery. The motor is very small, and I thought this was cool. The kit will not hold up to much abuse.

I would give this a three if the wire connectors were not so horrible. I would give this a three if there was a better solar cell. Fix both of these and I would give it a 4 and happily pay 20-30 for it.

I will say my son thinks it's pretty cool, but he quickly moved on to the erector set.

What a disappointment. My son spent his own money to buy this and it never worked. The connections are difficult to manipulate and we couldn't get any of the toys to work. Do not waste your money on this.
