Editorial Reviews

Crosby, Stills & Nash join forces for their first live performance video in over 20 years! Using audio from a filmed performance during their 2012 tour, this 2-disc CD set includes many of the trio's classic hits as well as new songs, "Radio", "Almost Gone", and "Girl From The North Country" (a cover of Bob Dylan's 1963 release). CSN 2012 is a must-have for any fan!

3.0 out of 5 stars Only for the diehard CSN collector... July 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I love Crosby, Stills & Nash. To me, they highlighted the entire Woodstock era and the early '70s. It's great that they still have the energy to make the music they enjoy but, I think they chose to release a new live concert CD several years too late. I understand the three are pushing 70 years old and it's sad to admit but, this is arguably bad. The instrumentation is great but the vocals (mainly Stills) are so hoarse and out of tune it's hard to truly enjoy what you're listening to. I'd like to see some more older concerts released from the vaults instead of this. Overall, if you are a collector it's still a nice piece of history to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars The magic still lives July 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD
CSN has not exactly flooded the market with new releases - the latest release of the 3 together being the CSNY release of "Deja Vu Live" which was extremely Neilocentric, to say the least. So for all fans this is a very welcome occasion to hear an official, brilliantly recorded concert.

And thankfuly they deliver a profound evening, mixing the old classics with newer songs, including Graham Nash's controversial and poignant tribute to Bradley Manning "Almost Gone". And diving deep into their impressive back catalogue, specially Stephen Stills who come up with the rarely performed "As I Come Of Age" and "So Begins The Task" (both played at the CSNY 1970 tour). Especially the first is truly magic, providing one of the moments of transcendent (vocal) beauty that is unique for this trio.

Much malign has been said about Stills's vocal, but actually his singing is better here than it has been in many years really enabling him to hit the higher notes. And his legendary guitarplaying as firery and riveting as ever. Graham Nash - probably one of the all time most underrated songwriters - and David Crosby still delivers their trademark harmony vocals.

As some of the other reviews here sadly demonstrates this band has for whatever reasons always attracted a certain animosity and some decisevely unfair criticism (I have good ears and I don't hear any false or rough vocals on this recording at all).

Sure the day when they were the vanguard is long gone, but what they deliver 2012 is very far from nostalgia and cash-in. So their broad and dedicated fan base should delight in this. And for new fans/listeners this might be the perfect introduction to one of the most adventurous and prolific bands ever.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice stoll down memory lane August 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was really excited to get this CD after so many years without any new releases. I was especially excited since it was a LIVE recording, since I have fond memories of being at concerts with CSNY in the 60-70's. When I first put the CD in and "Carry On" started, with a rough guitar sounding like it had been recorded in a basement recording studio, I was shocked. Then the vocals began. They made my ear hairs curl, and honestly, I wanted to turn it off and end the torture early. But, being the devoted fan I am, I decided to give it a fair trial. Stephen Stills lost his voice, and was out of tune, Graham Nash sounds like he's struggling, but David Crosby, even though his vocal chords have aged, is "carrying on" as well as he can. They all were out of tune horribly on the first track. I think their voices warmed up a bit after the first couple of tracks, which made the rest of the CD more bearable. Steven Stills warmed up nicely on the guitar as the concert progressed...Still not at his prime abilities, but rockin' none-the-less. Despite all of these harsh comments, I still enjoy the CD! The spirit of CSN is still strong, their message is classic, and the ability they have to transport you back in time to when protest meant a singleness of mind for peace, love, and stop the war--you can still feel it. So, for all of you long lost hippies out there from my generation, you'll probably still enjoy this CD for that reason alone. I'm finding myself listening to this much more than I first thought I would. As long as you're prepared for the aging voices, and can overlook some of the more technical aspects of the recording, you'll be okay. For the younger crowd who "didn't know them when" might want to pass on this one.

Crosby, Stills & Nash are the definitions of living legends. They have been called "the first real supergroup" (by more than one source, in fact) and one would certainly not be out of line saying that their harmony vocals are angelic. These guys are the real deal, plain and simple. The fact that they are still touring and are still attracting a large audience speaks volumes to just how important their music is to our world's culture, even in modern times.

Featuring David Crosby (a former member of The Byrds), Stephen Stills (a former member of Buffalo Springfield), and Graham Nash (a former member of British Invasion group The Hollies), CSN were (and still are) the best of the mellow rock groups. Their voices blended together in such a beautiful way, and while they have only given us eight studio albums (three with Stills' Buffalo Springfield bandmate and rock legend Neil Young), their output will outlive us all.

In 2012, CSN hit the road for a concert tour. I had the opportunity to see them live at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia on the opening night of their tour, and I stupidly (VERY stupidly, I should add) passed that opportunity up. I regret that immensely. This live release, 'CSN 2012' is the next best thing. It made me realize just how stupid I was for not going. Hopefully they'll come back to the Delmarva-New Jersey-Pennsylvania area sometime in 2014, but that's another subject.

This album features a show recorded live in California last year. The members (Crosby, 71, Nash, 70, and Stills, 67 at the time) sound amazing for their ages. People are complaining that "their voices have aged." WELL DUH! Of course they have! What did people honestly expect?!?
