Excellent video series
I just finished watching this video series, and I'm pretty impressed. The setup is very professional, and easy to watch. Eric Meyer uses a made-up site, Javaco Tea, for teaching the CSS concepts. And, he goes through every detail, from masthead to footer, explaining how each piece works. He assumes you already know the basics of CSS syntax, and the reasons for using CSS...

1 Bad Teacher
OK..He co-created CSS, but he's just a bad teacher. Instead of building a site from ground-up, he chose an already finished website. BAD CHOICE. After watching this DVD for the 2nd time I can't say that I haven't learned 'SOME' CSS. The way he explains things is just confusing. He jumps from font-colors to Margins and padding on an already finished website. He doesn't...

Excellent video series,

I just finished watching this video series, and I'm pretty impressed. The setup is very professional, and easy to watch. Eric Meyer uses a made-up site, Javaco Tea, for teaching the CSS concepts. And, he goes through every detail, from masthead to footer, explaining how each piece works. He assumes you already know the basics of CSS syntax, and the reasons for using CSS. At the same time, he doesn't skip over things when showing how the page is built. He explains why each value is what it is. I felt his use of selectors was nice and clear, and I liked his example of using negative margins to allow two columns to sit side by side. If you want to get up to speed quickly on how a CSS-based site is put together, I would highly recommend this product.
The only problem I found was he apparently didn't test with IE6 for Windows. The test page works fine on Firefox, but the masthead breaks on IE6. One of the Amazon reviews for the similarly-titled book gives the fix: In #masthead, an additional rule is needed: line-height: 1.1;

After watching this DVD for the 2nd time I can't say that I haven't learned 'SOME' CSS. The way he explains things is just confusing. He jumps from font-colors to Margins and padding on an already finished website. He doesn't explain how he positioned the divs OR how to position ANY div(except float). When it comes to negative margins and padding the way he explains them is just confusing, maybe because THE WEBSITE IS ALREADY BUILD!!!!
The title of the DVD "CSS Web Site Design" is misleading. You will NOT learn how to build a website from ground up. All he does is edit an already finished product. For Example: He's making changes to the content of the website with CSS(between the <head> tags), while another external stylesheet is already linked. Not 1 time did he go to the external stylesheet to explain what's there. For a 150$ you can buy 3-4 BOOKS on CSS. Believe me, It's not worth your money. I learned HTML by just reading 5 chapters out of a book years ago and didn't need to finish the rest of the book, so it's not like I'm challenged intellectually. It's all about the Teacher..and he's not 1! If your a Beginner on CSS DO NOT buy this DVD.

Good tutorial on some of the nitty gritty details of CSS design,

I see this tutorial like a intermediate between a "developer" title like CSS for Developers
and CSS for Designers It gives a clear presentation of CSS grammar and rules using as context a "realistically complex" web page and not just toy examples. It doesn't go as far as offering a complete course of web site design, but enough to get your feet wet and start thinking not only in terms of CSS rules and grammar but also on the more difficult part, that is how to use those techniques to solve a realistic problem and achieve a good looking result. The only problem with this title is not that "THE WEBSITE IS ALREADY BUILD!!!!" as some nitwit has complained, that is actually a good point: the author describes the various points and usages of CSS using different regions of an already "good looking" page. That's a plus to me, because it makes the presentation more engaging and the context more realistic. And at the end of the tutorial series there's a sequence of videos in which all the skills mastered in the previous chapters are put together to re-assemble the page design from the ground up. The real problem is that the whole title revolves on a single page, not a website! This is a unavoidable is some sense, because a serious presentation of CSS and Web Design of the typical length of a Lynda series can't really go much further... and well Eric Meyer is definitely a "serious" kind of guy :) I just wish he made a tutorial series say five or ten times this, both in length and depth.. Anyway.. this is a recommended title if you want to see the CSS grammar and rules in action on a somewhat graphically realistic (though one limited to one page) example. |
