5.0 out of 5 stars This speaker is for other audio... not music...
This speaker is not about music... and anyone wanting a speaker like this for music needs to look elsewhere (if such a thing even exists). Where this speaker excels is audio... podcasts, audio books and video. I have an iPod Touch, and this speaker works great for items in those three categories. 1.0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE!!!
This is probably one of the WORST products I've bought in a LONG time! It should be something found in a dollar store -- no joke!

PROS:
- No batteries needed
- Smaller than a bread box

CONS:
- No volume (earbuds laying on the table could produce as much sound)
- Much larger than it seems in pics

This speaker is not about music... and anyone wanting a speaker like this for music needs to look elsewhere (if such a thing even exists). Where this speaker excels is audio... podcasts, audio books and video. I have an iPod Touch, and this speaker works great for items in those three categories. I really love to be able to listen to audio books without headphones, and the speaker even fits in perfectly with the iPod Touch when the unit is turned sideways for video. A wonderful bonus is that this unit (and it's the only one I could find with this feature) requires NO batteries! It gets its power from the iPod.

Highly recommended for podcast, audio book and video listeners...

- Dangerous to the delicate jack on your MP3 player

After reading many of the reviews on here where people complained about the low volume, I thought they probably just had high expectations. I went into it with very low expectations. I expected that this thing would not get any louder than the speaker on a cheap cell phone. However, this thing is SO LOW that my earbuds can produce as much sound from as far away. I can put this up against my ear at full volume and it's still barely loud. I typically keep my volume restricted at about 75% on my iPod. I had to unrestrict it and crank it up to 100% to hear sound in a quiet room. Once you pass about the 80% mark on an iPod, these speakers crackle (but still don't give you enough sound). I am convinced that the company used the cheapest speakers they could find. I know that the speaker in my cell phone is about 10 times louder, eventhough it's about 1/4 of the size of each of these two speakers.

The size of this piece of junk is actually much larger than it appears in photos. It's about 4.24"w x 1.5"d x .75"h. It could have very easily been about half of its size (the housing is just a big empty cavity).

The jack is mounted rigidly (no swivel, etc.). So, it's always sticking out and when plugged into your MP3 player, it will act as a huge lever, applying force that can easily break the solder points on your MP3 player's audio jack.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS PRODUCT! All I wanted was to listen to podcasts through this thing with my iPod on the table right next to my keyboard -- this isn't going to cut it, at all!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great speaker, October 23, 2007

This is a great speaker for my I Pod. I hate these speakers with cords or ones that take batteries. This one is perfect. It is small. It doesn't get as much sound as most portable speakers but hey, it does the job for me. It's a great speaker. I can keep my I Pod next to me when I lay on my bed or use to take with me when I go places.

DISADVANTAGES
1. Not as loud as other speakers (this is also an advantage in another way)
2. Too big for an IPod 1 GB shuffle

ADVANTAGES
1. Needs no batteries
2. has no cord
3. Sticks right into headphone jack of player and stays there
4. It's not as loud as other speakers so when you use it in public, your music you disturb others

3.0 out of 5 stars ALMOST what I hoped for..., September 17, 2008

At first I could not get much sound from this speaker so I thought it was practically useless.
Then I realized that because I have a plastic cover on my iPod, the cover was not allowing the speaker stem to go fully into the iPod (as the earphones do).
In order to get decent sound, I have to remove the cover each time - an inconvenience but at least the product does work - and before I discovered the 'cover factor' I thought I had ordered a bad product overall.
I wish they had made the contact stem longer so I did not have to remover the cover.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pump it up, December 8, 2007

Not enough volume to make this really a useful device. Although it is nice looking, and does not need batteries, the latter also proves to be its downfall, as any ambient noise in the room drowns out the output of the speakers. Not recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Speaker for Children, May 4, 2008

This is a perfect speaker for my son's ipod. He's almost 3 and we use the ipod (loaded with his favorite movies) to help pass the time at restaurants, traveling, shopping, ect. It's just loud enough for him to hear it and it's never bothered anyone else. I love that the speakers do not use any other battery source but the ipod. And it doesn't drain the ipod battery very fast --a huge plus. The price is perfect--buy two, as these aren't the most sturdy speakers. I've had to repair mine with a little super glue, but it's still going strong.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even good for audiobooks, January 14, 2008

I bought this with listening to audiobooks in mind. Even for this purpose, the unit is too quiet on most audiobooks, and where an audiobook is recorded hot (louder than normal), it distorts before a listenable volume unless it's just 18" or so from my ear.

It's a nice concept, but you really need a battery-boosted unit, or a set of cheap powered PC speakers if you want to listen on the cheap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, cheap, portable speaker for videos/audiobooks., November 24, 2007
This review is from: CTA Digtal Attachable Speaker for iPod and MP3 Players (Electronics)
The amount of volume this little thing pumps out is surprising considering it runs on the same power as headphones. It's quite thin, easy to slip in your pocket. The sound quality certainly isn't great, but it works. If you're looking for music speakers, you'll need something bigger, something with it's own power source, otherwise, I'd recommend this.
