I hesitated a little to buy this item due to many negative comments but I took a chance and bought one. My Softride bike carrier has 2 inch bar and I had only 1 1/4 inch hitch opening on my Subaru due to a limited towing capacity.
This adapter fits perfectly on my 1 1/4 hitch made by Curt Manufacturing.
It may be because they are the same brand.
I can carry my bikes around on my Subaru. :-)

Just as a FYI I recently purchased this item for a camping trip. I did a lot of extensive research on how to get my 1.25 Draw-Tite Class I Hitch to accept a 2 inch adapter and I found nothing on Class 1 adapters everything was for Class II and III. So I decided to purchase this Curt 1.25 to 2 adapter and it worked perfectly! So for anyone out there confused like i was this does work no mods needed for Class 1 hitches.

I ordered this so I could use my older bike rack (for a 2" receiver) with my 2005 Ford Explorer (1 1/4" receiver). I was a little hesitant based on some of the reviews, but when I checked a few other trailer oriented web sites (e.g. not amazon, but sites which focused on trailers and trailer products), they all seemed to carry this one. And, I thought it looked better than one of the others on Amazon (e.g. how it was built).

So, I went ahead and ordered it --- and, it fits both the trailer hitch on the explorer and my 2" bike rack just fine. In fact, it even has a tiny bit of play in it to get it into the receiver .. so, I can't say whether it's just the one I happened to receive or whether the product was tweeked in general, but it fits perfectly fine, no sanding, grinding, etc. needed!

I have yet to use it with my bike rack, but just thought I'd post based on the fit since others had commented on that.

I ordered it with the 1/2" pin that is listed with it, and it fits fine. And, the amazon price is hard to beat, especially with Amazon Prime, since this baby is heavy and I can't imagine what the shipping would be ordinarily.

I needed an adapter from 1.25" to 2" but for a Class I hitch. I found some other adapters but many people complained that the depth on a Class I and a Class II hitch is different (Class I being shorter) and that many adapters are intended for the Class II... but this one fit like a glove. However... after buying this adapter I notched that Harbor Freight also has an adapter of this type for half the cost... but I don't know if it will fit the Class I... but if you live nearby a Harbor Freight it might not hurt to try theirs first... One last thing... as many other stated... the adapter DOES NOT come with the pin, nut, etc... shown in the picture...

*** Update: After the first use I realized that because my car is so low to the ground I needed a hitch riser... I ended up buying a 2" hitch riser and adding it to this adapter... because it also distanced the hitch rack from the vehicle hatch... However.. they have hitch riser adapter that will go directly from 1.25" to 2" with the rise... I am still giving it a 5 because the issue is with my vehicle being too low... not with the adapter.

Great product. The Curt Hitch adapter fits my 1 1/4 inch receiver with no modifications. Unlike some of the other reviews. It is the same brand as the receiver. I can now use my Hitch Haul platform with the receiver for my car too. It save me from having to buy another Hitch haul with a 1 1/4 inch fitment. The hitch receiver for my Hyundai Elantra only comes in the 1 1/4 inch size because of the weight limitations for the car to tow.
As for the reviewer who stated he can not tow with the adapter, he should have read the specifications and the advisory that it is NOT for towing.

I have a Ford Explorer with a factory 1-1/4" hitch. I did not experience the hole alignment problem or the sizing issue mentioned in the other poor rating for this product. It slid in easily and the holes matched up. The reason I gave this device a low rating is that it is stamped with a warning that says something to the effect of: "This device is not to be used for towing." At the time of purchase and of review, there was no such statement on the product page. This is an expensive device if its only use is adapting for bike carriers and such. Now I still need something that I can use for towing my jetski. I'm guessing it probably would work for that but if the manufacturer says not to trust it for that purpose, then it would be foolish to jeopardize the safety of those behind me by doing so. They should have been upfront about the limitations of their product. Additionally I found this product by searching for the term "tow adapter". If it cannot tow then that search term should be disassociated from this product.

Great product but it doesn't include the pin, washer, nut and retainer clip shown in the second image, so if you need these you need to buy them separately. Shame on Amazon for the misleading image and shame on me for not reading all the customer reviews (THE Sean pointed this out).

This product fits and functions as advertised. The problem people are having is that their on-vehicle trailer hitch receivers are from a bunch of different manufacturers and most 2" shanks are long enough that the relationship between the hitch pin hole and the face of the receiver tube is not an issue with a standard 2" ball mount. This adapter needs to be made to fit close to the receiver to retain the most strength and the result is that sometimes the shaft is too short to allow the pin to be inserted. Another solution, rather than re-drill the pin hole, is to grind the on-vehicle receiver down to allow it to fit. This should not affect the strength of your receiver hitch.

Bought This adapter so I could use a Bike Rack and Platform I had for a 2" receiver.
The Chevy HHR is only rated for a Class I Hitch 1 1/4" receiver, 200lb tongue weight,2,000lb max Load pull.
This adapter is really made to Adapt NOT TO TOW with.
This Adapter will stick out about 2 1/2" past Bumper, using a Curt 11447 Trailer Hitch.
It fits very snug the first time use, Almost didn't think I was going to be able to get the Retention Pin
Through the Hole, but it finally did with a little twisting!
Better tight than Sloppy.
Very Happy with this Adapter!!

The extender is fine for my bike rack, but I did have to drill out the holes in the larger end of the receiver to match the 1/2 inch attachment hole in my rack. Before drilling, I could attach the rack with a thinner pin, but it wobbled a lot. Be aware that the hitch pin that appears next to "most customers also buy..." is too short. Buy a longer 1/2 inch pin instead - better yet, buy a locking pin. Fortunately the recommended pin was very inexpensive - not worth returning. I am temporarily using a bolt until I get a longer pin.
