4.0 out of 5 stars If you like chops..., December 11, 2003

....then this is the album for you. Once again, the 3rd CAB is all about the chops, with Chambers, Macalpine, and Brunel showing off their prowess in another fusion-fest. As with the other CAB projects, if you're looking for memorable melodies, you've come to the wrong place. But these guys are *very* good at what they do, and this album shows it.

And just to follow up on the question for previous reviewers... yes, it's CAB 4, and yes, it's the 3rd offering from these guys. Apparently it's something of an inside joke, I've heard. Though I suspect this might be one of those things that seemed clever at the time, yet seems a lot less so in retrospect....

5.0 out of 5 stars Cab rules, and Cab 3 is out there., July 4, 2005
This review is from: Cab 4 (Audio CD)
I recently saw Cab play at the Baked Potato in Los Angeles and they were amazing. They played tunes from all the Cab records, and all I have to say is that I bought Cab 3 from Bunny Brunel, its a live double CD of them playing at the Baked Potato. I forgot who the key board player was for the CD but the drummer was Virgil Donati, who is an amazing player.

If you like old school rock/jazz fusion, this album is for you.Dennis Chambers is one of the world's best drummers (Funkadelic; John McClaughlin; Santana); he has played with all the best and is a phenominal player. Bunny Brunel played with Chick Corea and if you like killer, fast, funky bass playing, he is your man.Tony Mac is new to me and he writes swell tunes and plays exciting guitar and keyboards. Throw in Ms Patrice Rushen on piano on a few tracks and you have a heady musical stew.Well recorded, great playing, some long jams-a fusion lovers delight. Their previous 2 albums are equally excellent ( there is no CAB 3-some kind of inside joke). Happy listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Fusion, February 14, 2005
This review is from: Cab 4 (Audio CD)
First and foremost, pick this up just to hear Patrice Rushen's chops. Brian Auger is an excellent and underrated keyboardist. Tony McAlpine and fusion are synonymous. His guitar solo on "Jam and Toast" tells a story. Bunny Brunel's bass playing on this album will make you go home and shed, and re-shed. Dennis Chambers has to be my favorite drummer of all time and proves that funk cannot be learned, it just is!!

This cd is for fusion fans (fanatic's) and for any musician who is willing to raise the stakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best in class of a fading style of music., May 21, 2007
By
Squire Jaco (Buffalo, NY USA) - See all my reviews

Regrettably, this style of jazz/rock fusion is not being championed by many younger musicians these days. But the seasoned veterans seem to keep re-grouping in different combinations, and once in a while they really do it up right. CAB is one of those groups, and their third cd, CAB4, is the best of their output. This album charges right out of the gate with the hard driving, groove-laden "Hold On", and sets the pace for the rest of the album. Not that there aren't some nice slower tunes too, but you LIVE for the typical showcase spots that let the soloists shine: Brunel is a fantastic master of the fretless bass, Chambers is a peerless drummer, Auger and Rushen add great atmospheres and riffs on keyboards, and MacAlpine never sounded better - he's left behind the metallic shred that crept into a couple of songs on the CAB1 cd, and lets his jazz chops shine like the sun here on this one. At close to 67 minutes long, this cd contains such a nice balance of groove, drive, funk, jazz and energy - and you'll remember the melodies long after the music stops! Reminiscent of bits from Return to Forever, Larry Coryell, Bill Bruford, Weather Report, Chick Corea's Elektric Band, and others from the 70's and 80's, this album is a great addition to the fusion canon.

With great musical rides at the lowest fares possible, you'll want to catch this CAB.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.8/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.0 ("4-1/2 stars")

I have been a fusion fan since the 70s. This CD has what I like: great tunes and great playing. I dislike fusion tunes that are just chord changes for the musicians to romp over. I really like Bunny Brunell's tunes. If you like heavy fusion, you will like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible music, November 8, 2011

The music on this Cd is incredible from the Bass playing of Bunny Brunel to the Guitar playing of Tony MacAlpine to Piano of Patrice Rushen the Organ playing of Brian Auger and the Incredible Drumming of Dennis Chambers. This Cd is just what I was looking for to improve my jazz fusion licks on guitar. The intensity of the music is fierce throughout the whole Cd. I would recommend this Cd to anyone who loves Jazz fusion.

These guys are amazing. Along with Niacin they are some of the best in the jazz-rock fusion league of the present day. And yeah, by the way, where is CAB 3? It seems to be missing!
