Editorial Reviews

It is 1969, and the great pianist/composer Duke Ellington was on one of his many arduous European tours. However for the first time we are afforded a snapshot of one of his most intimate club performances ever recorded. The place is Cabaret L'Alcazar in Paris, France, and Ellington and his 'instrument', the Famous Orchestra are in rare form, bringing forth a funky, soulful energy sparked of course by his assistant arranger at the time, Hammond Organ pioneer Wild Bill Davis. The great Johnny Hodges, still within a year of his life's ending, is playing excellently still, showing no signs of slowing down here. The famous celebrity Maurice Chevalier was in the house, even gifting the Duke one of his famous hats. It's a party atmosphere entirely but the music is as consistent and swinging as ever. Luminaries such as Hodges, Cootie Williams, Cat Anderson, Harry Carney, Paul Gonsalves, and Lawrence Brown are all cooking here. This is truly a night to remember, and needs to be heard by Ellington aficionados and music lovers alike.

With hundreds of Ellington recordings available, spanning half a century, why one more, and one from an off-label? The answer is simple: this is Duke Ellington, American's greatest composer, longest-running big band leader, and ambassador of stage grace a beauty. Some of us, thus, are completists regarding Duke's massive oeuvre.

This recording has clear fidelity, sounding as if it was recorded professionally. There is no distortion and only one brief volume drop off. Most importantly, the band sounds fine indeed as it moves through standards and less known pieces. But even the standards were never performed the same way twice, saving us from anything close to hackneyed.

Some of the distinguished soloists are Harold Ashby, Paul Gonsalves, and Harry Carney. Trumpet player Cat Anderson-- one of Duke's rare lapses in musical taste--does not solo, although his annoyingly off-pitch high notes are heard a few times--but mercifully in the background and not in the foreground.

As a late-period live recording, "Live at Cabaret L'Alcazar" is another superb documentation of a jazz legend and American gem: Edward Kennedy Ellington. I am grateful for it.

The music is fine; the recording leaves a lot to be desired. You can get this music on records with much better sound.

This is a great CD for those Jazz Lovers who enjoy the Big Band like I do. Duke's Orchestra was as usual very profound in their playing. All the soloist were just great. It is a great CD to listen to.
