A highly addictive import from Colombia that is not illegal,
This review is from: Cabas (Audio CD)
His telephone must be "Ring-Ring-Ringing," because Barranquilla and Bogota, Colombia have a new addictive export, Andres Cabas. Move over Juanes and Shakira. I purchased the CD after hearing that he might be a contender for a best new artist Grammy Award. After listening to the CD four times, I can see why. It contains joy filled, rhythmic tracks in a variety of styles. And by variety, I mean mucho variety. Cabas, the son of a DJ and record producer, mixes Latin pop and salsa and South American folkloric music, as well as rhythms of coastal zamba, bullerengue, raspa, fandango (triple time), cumbia (coastal Colombian-African dance), and boldly flirtatious porro (cumbia with more African Bombo rim drumming). Like his deeply rooted stick figure doodle of a man on the CD case, his music gets nourishment from traditional Colombian sounds. I swear, I think there are even three tracks that contain some plaintive klezmer riffs (check tracks 7 and 9)! How "Mi Bon-bon" is not getting constant U.S. airplay, I have no idea. Mi Bon-Bon is so much fun to hear, it is hard to believe that it is a song of sadness over his lost "bon-bon-bonita." Track 3's Mala Hierba is a festive barranquillera and reminiscent of a drum filled Santana piece, although it concerns some bad...and the soul of the celebration. Ana Maria, track 7, is spirited, clarinet filled, and similar to track 13. The slowly romantic and breathless 6th track, "Tu Boca" (your mouth), evokes a steamy erotic kiss on a warm Barranquilla beach. Track 8, Jincho, can compete with and beat any rock track on the market today. I can see the piano filled Track 13, Colombia Terra Querida (My Beloved Land, Colombia), becoming Colombia's new anthem, or at least a sweeping dance tune. I would not be surprised of Brazil stole this track for their own. A salsa version of Mi Bombon is the final track. In closing, buy this CD, DISCOVER it, and listen to it, before Cabas get "made over" and watered down for the North American market.

I bought this CD while vacationing in Colombia (that was about 2 years ago) and have not stopped playing it since!! The amazing ethnic sounds along with the electric guitar makes this CD the best exponent of Colombia's costeno culture and today's sounds. I love every single one of the songs. The drums makes your skin glow. Listening to Andres's sounds is like a religious and erotic experience. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE COLOMBIAN ARTISTS THAT CONTINUE TO SHOW THE WORLD THE BEAUTY OF OUR COUNTRY! Thank you for keeping us close to our culture from the distance.

If you are into bachata dancing, you've heard this song, danced this song, love this song, and wondered where to buy it. Tu Boca is included on this CD, by EMI Latin. However, EMI Latin, for whatever reason, has not:
* Continued to make the CD available new * Put Tu Boca for sale on iTunes, or * Put Tu Boca for sale on Amazon MP3 downloads. Stupid. The ONLY legal way to get Tu Boca by Andres Cabas is to buy a used CD on eBay, Craigslist or a garage sale, or find a new CD on Amazon from one of its little indy record store partners. I've been looking for this for a long time, and I've ordered it! Mi Bombon is also on this CD - a hit in Columbia, the country in which Andres Cabas was born. When my new CD arrives you can bet it will be played at all my Latin dance parties!

his cd is inspired by the many far ranging sounds of Colombian rhythms. Its very different and like Carlos Vives he fusions the modern electric guitar for that fuller hippier sound. Very anxious to hear his next album..i have a feeling he will be very big in the future.

First saw the video for "Mi Bombon" on Link TV (www.linktv.org). This CD contains 3 versions of "Mi Bombon" (just in CASE you can't get enough of it - like me!) - a regular version, salsa version, and the video. Other songs have variety and great beats too. The ballad "Tu Boca" contains instruments not usually heard in American pop ballads (bonus video of that song too!). Touching on ballads, Latin, and rock, this is a great CD for those who like Latin music.
