5.0 out of 5 stars Best Activision Hunting Game yet for PS2!!!, October 27, 2006
By
Activision's latest game is a much improved offering than their past hunting games in the Cabela series. In this latest addition, they have eliminated the time wasted with wandering from site to site, by providing guides which take you to location. There is still a health meter, but you don't run out of breath every time you run 10 feet. They appear to have also added a feature similar to 'Gun' - R2 slows down time, allowing you to have the time to zero in for a cleaner shot, or wheel around to deal with a charging rhino.

Additionally, so far as I can tell there is no requirement to buy things, or sleep, or use animal calls. You can select from instant hunts, or a Safari. You need to pass through certain goals in order to unlock certain weapons and other hunting options - this is nothing new. One goal of the game is of course the challenge associated with hunting 'the Big Five.' Rhino, etc.

I was very impressed, and enjoyed my first few hours with the game immensely. I have not opened or had resort to conferring with the manual once, which demonstrates how intuitive the game is - particularly for those who have played similar hunting type games, or 'Gun.' Another piece that I am quite pleased with is the difference between some of the other Cabela games I have played and this one, in terms of the settings and the way in which the animals react. Even on the easy settings, in the earlier Cabela games, the animals continually seemed to run away from you - often it almost felt as if they knew when you were zeroing in for a kill, and would suddenly bolt. You could use cover scent, come in downwind and creep on your hands and knees - it didn't make a difference. Safari doesn't play that way at all.

There are some different types of hunts in Safari also, which for example have you shooting from the inside of a moving vehicle, etc. I have only made it through one Country so far [bought the game only yesterday], and look forward to the next challenge. There are a wide variety of animals to hunt, and unlike some of the earlier games, the bag limit per hunt is significantly higher. You do not need to retrieve your fallen game - another bonus.

There is also the challenge of skirting a predator, which may simply decide to hunt you while you are engaged in hunting something else. You still have to deal with some rules, and there are points deducted for violations, however, it didn't bother me as much in this game as it has in past games.

I have yet to figure everything out, use every weapon, hunt every animal, etc., however I am extremely impressed with this game, particularly when I compare it to some of the other hunting games I have purchased.

This game is rated T for Teen. In my opinion it's the best hunting game offering on the market for PS2 since 'Deer Hunter' by Atari.

Now if only they would do a version which was compatible with a light gun, or make one that had a Multi-player option...sigh....

5.0 out of 5 stars An overall great game!, April 17, 2007
A Kid's Review

This is one great game. It has especially good graphics and it's really realistic when a rhino, wild boar, leopard, or buffalo charges you. There are tons of animals to hunt and five African countries to choose from. When you go on Safari Hunt you tour every country and stay at a lodge there, while trying to shoot all of the game in that particular country. The best part is after you complete the game it dosen't just sit on a shelf collecting dust, but it always has an exciting hunt to do. This is certainly a great use of your money!

What a great little hunting game for the PS2!!! Lots of animals to hunt and weapons to chose from!!! Incredible graphics too!!!It's not the easiest game to learn to play at first, but it gets easier as you play it and get more familiar with the controls!!! Remember, this is only a game, not real hunting,I would NEVER hunt these animals for real,it's a fantasy, not reality,I love animals!!! Having said that this is a fun game that me and my nephew enjoy playing!!! Definately not for everyones taste, but if you like a good hunting simulator, this one hits the target!!! Cabela's African Safari from Activision delivers!!! Two thumbs up!!! Way up!!! A+

5.0 out of 5 stars So much more then we expected!, January 6, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cabelas African Safari (Video Game)
I ordered this game because I had ordered Cabela's North American Trophy Bucks and it ended up being back ordered. I wanted a game for us to play over the Christmas holiday and since I wasn't sure if the Cabela's North American Trophy Bucks would be shipped to us in time, I also bought Cabela's African Safari.

Let me start off by saying this game is awesome! So much better then I was expecting. My husband is an avid duck hunter (in real life), and the Cabela's African Safari duck hunting BLOWS AWAY the duck hunting in Cabela's North American Trophy Bucks! I couldn't believe how much better it was.

When I first showed my husband the Cabela's African Safari, he looked at me like I was nuts for getting that one. But I told him to give it a chance, since the reviews on Amazon were to great. He did and he LOVES this game. The hunting/shooting had smooth movement and great graphics. The Cabela's North American Trophy Bucks was a joke compared to this one. No one even plays that one in our house, everyone would rather play the Cabela's African Safari.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of cabela's best games, December 23, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cabelas African Safari (Video Game)
To all of us hunters out there, a lot of us dream of the ultimate trophy hunting- Africa. From Kudu, to zebra, to hyena- this game has all sorts of animals for you to hunt. So you can save about $5000 and hunt in Africa from the comfort of your home.

Now, the graphics arent the best, but they dont absolutely suck either. You have a wide variety of guns (being a deer hunter, I saw some guns I'd never heard of!). Pistols, shotguns, and rifles with scopes for all of them. The classic rifles, like the .243, .270, and the .300 wind magnum are all there, but you got some real high caliber rifles like the .505 and the .600. As for shotguns, you have 2 variations of the .410 and 2 variations of the .12 gauge, but those are for bird hunting. Theres scopes for all of the guns.

As far as gear, sadly you dont have any. That would've been nice, but you really dont need it. The hunts are either glass and stalk (that's how most of them are), jumping up birds and shooting, hunting a large, moving herd from a jeep and there are maybe 2 baited hunts. There's a porter who will tell you what gun you need, a tracker and a guide who give you some general advice about where to hunt. Usually, they are right. Each level you have to hunt between 1-5 animals. There are 5 countries, each having 1 boss animal which has it's own trophy hunt (ever heard of the big 5?). You must kill the trophy animal or you have to start the hunt over. Trophy animals are bigger and darker. In south Africa, there's the rhino. Namibia is home to the Leopard. In Botswana, you hunt elephant (yes, that's legal in some places). Then you hunt cape buffalo in Zimbabwe, and the Lion in Mozambique. If you ever have a close encounter with an animal- bust out the old shotgun, it saved and finished the hunt for the lion.

All in all, a great game. I'd reccomend buying it, it's alot of fun.
