4.0 out of 5 stars Get that Zebra !, November 25, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cabela's African Safari (Video Game)
I bought this game on a whim, but don't regret my decision one bit. The only con to this game is somewhat long load times. The pros are many. Graphics are simply gorgeous and much more realistic than one may expect. The sound effects are right on the money, from the sounds of your steps in the water to the boom of your shotgun.
There are several types of guns in the game: pistols, shotguns, rifles and crossbows. Different calibers are available and picking the right one for your prey is part of the game. As your progress through the game custom versions of firearms become available. If you don't know anything about guns don't worry, your porter will advise you on the best selection. The game offers several modes: a safari adventure - which basically a story mode, open season where you pick a hunt you have been on before, a tournament where you hunts birds with a shotgun- this mode also has a hot seat mode, instant hunt, and dangerous seven where as you unlock them you hunt the most dangerous animals around - may it be rhino lion or a crocodile.
There are plenty of animals to hunt on in this game, from ducks, and geese to all kinds of antelopes, big cats and rhinos. The hunts very: from tracking animal on foot, riding on a jeep, or an a using a boat to get at some fowl.
I would not recommend this game to a young player given the subject, but will wholeheartedly recommend it to any one else 4.5/5

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Just a Game!, December 11, 2006
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cabela's African Safari (Video Game)
Many years ago, I bought Cabela's Big Game Hunter to play on my computer. The fact that I was playing the game with the keyboard and the mouse kept me from getting the most enjoyment out of it. I saw this new version for the Sony PSP and decided to give it a try. I am always looking for PSP games that have a very short and gentle learning curve.

This is certainly much more sophisticated than my old pc game. And the controls on the PSP are an exponential improvement over a keyboard. As I predicted, the learning curve for this game is a lot more gentle and much shorter than you might find in the typical game. The objective is still the same: find/stalk your prey, aim, and shoot. However, a few other elements are introduced here. There is the concept of "adrenaline". You have the advantage if you take the initiative while your adrenaline meter is full, for example. There is another concept where you have to take consideration of the animal's ability to sense. The distance from which the animal can sense your presence is shown as a circle on the map. If you are inside the cirle, your target can sense you.

You have the ability to change weapons in response to the type of animal you are hunting. Your native Guide (accent and all) will always give you advice to help you make decisions. At the start, you will have a 243 rifle and a 44 revolver to use. The right shoulder button on the PSP is the "trigger".

Please keep in mind that this is only a game. I would never consider killing any of the animals in the game, or any animal for that matter, in real life. And I do not endorse the taking of animals for trophy. A video game is just a game, and I am capable of separating game play from real life. On the other hand, I will agree with the other reviewer and advice that this game is not for younger children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun the first run-through, January 1, 2008

= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cabela's African Safari (Video Game)
I own two other Cabela's games, Deer Hunter 2005 Season and Alaskan Adventures. I just recently bought a PSP, so I picked up this for it.

Pros:
-New animals
-Graphics are decent
-Load times are significantly shorter than its PS2 counterparts.
-No worry about using the wrong gun/bow if you (like myself) have no knowledge about them. You can speak with the 'Porter' and he'll tell you which one, you just need to select it from the inventory (which can be accessed at anytime, during the hunt or not)

Cons:
-Hunts are the same. The animals are in the same place every time you play a specific hunt.
-No trophy shots. Once you successfully complete the hunt, you never see the animal you tagged. There is no option to view them from the menu, either, just how many you've gotten.
-Controls are tricky until you get used to them. There are only 4 options for gameplay controls, all being only slightly different from each other.
-All hunts are timed. If you don't complete the objective in the alotted time, you fail. This is especially irritating to me.

All-in-all, this game is enjoyable, but if you are one for different game play, once you finish this game you might as well exchange it for something new because the game play will not change unless you make the animal run away first and then track it down.
