Usually I hunt on a PC...,

I really enjoyed TrophyHunter and DeerHunter 2005 for PC, so I thought I'd try a playstation game and see what it's all about. I'm not a hunter in real life, but I do enjoy playing hunting games more than other sorts of shooter games. Fewer aliens, more rifles, maybe some bunnies - I guess that's what I like.
Cabela's Outdoor Adventures is a pretty good game. Personally, i don't find many, many different vehicles that interesting. I do enjoy all the firearms, though. And bows. I really like the game options: you can play Adventure mode and create a character, you can compete in a markmanship or trophy contest, or you can take a Challenge and beat a record. You can also play in Free Hunt mode, where the game fits you out with equipment and thrusts you into some locale. The graphics are good-to-okay. Repetitive motions on some of the animals get a little tiresome - this is where Deerhunter and Trophyhunter have spoiled me - but the basic animal forms look good. Animal AI is good enough - could be better. (Calls work well, but you must be close enough. Tons of Apparently Unrealistic Things occur with the animals, but c'mon - it's a game! It's unrealistic, but do you really want to be playing this game for ten hours, waiting in ambush?!) Ambient environment - clouds, animal noises, ground cover, wind, rain, etc - is excellent! I love the eerie sound of foxes barking in the woods! Weasels, badgers, mountain goats, bears, wolves, and those out-of-control vicious bobcats make the game richer than just walking through the trees, hunting hoofed creatures. The fishing option is repetitive, yes - it takes no talent, only timing - but I enjoy it when something else in the game has frustrated me. (Like finding the right Trophy Mule Buck...) You can only fish near a fishing sign, and you can't move once you begin casting = dumb, but you'll get over it. My fave part of the game is when the warden steps in and assigns you a special task or mission - rescuing a lost helicopter pilot, taking out a rabid coyote, finding the poacher's camp, harvesting ten rabbits - these surprises are great, and I wish there were more of them! Also, I enjoy the shotgun competitions. A good game, especially if it's on-sale! Occasionally heart-pounding, so make sure you have a good sized screen to fully appreciate the stalking experience.
