1.0 out of 5 stars Cabela's should be ashamed of themselves... March 9, 2012
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I don't usually care if I like a game or not...you keep playing or you write it off and move on, they are not for everyone. However, I have all the cabela games. Some are better than others but I have enjoyed each one. This one? No. I didn't sign up to climb or sled my way around the world. And why do I have to climb to get up the mountain when the dog doesn't have to? Why can't I travel his path, spend less time on the wall and more time hunting? The things you get to shoot takes absolutely no skill and are few and far between with no variety. You don't collect anything for trophies, you have no control over where you get to look. The video is dark, I had to adjust my television 3 times to see the game, never had to do that before. I completed the game because I kept thinking it had to get better, any minute now I get to actually hunt..no. Was over in 3 1/2 hours. Cabela's should be ashamed to have their name on this one...I give it ZERO stars, but the review makes me pick the lowest available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun! But short in all areas! November 2, 2011
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Well to start off Its fun Buy It!!! I give the game a 3.5, but I give the arcade levels a 5, which is why we buy it! When I first saw this game I was expecting it to be dangerous hunts 2012 with a different name and it is! But it only takes about 5 hours to beat on easy and there are only 18 arcade type arenas instead of 40 or fifty like the last great hit.

Cons -
1. I think you should be able to change your view from 3rd to 1st person. sometimes when you are in a battle it seems like you are putting your target on your own head and you cant see the wolf.
2. The camera is very limited! you cant change it to see your surroundings or whats on the ledge beneath you, or if there is a ledge beneath you.
3. Bats! I don't mind shooting things that are coming at me but I cant stand it when I can't see them! In the second to last level you have to shoot bats while your hanging, and the room is black and the bats are black, so you are shooting into the air and was very annoying!!
4. The enemies! the whole game is either wolves or bears! every boss is a bear. you would think that in Alaska there could be some more game. Every now and then they throw in a mountain lion.
5. It can loose the realization that it is a shooter and has you climbing all over the walls like a prince of Persia. This is fun though!

Pros -
The cons sounded bad but the game is really fun! remember we don't buy this type of game for the cheese story but for the hours of playing with friends in the arcade (survival & trek) levels and that is just as fun as ever.

1. It saves often!!! so if something happens you are only one step away.
2. The graphics are great!

this game is not good and is very short and way to much climbing with a bad story line. this game would be ever short but the climb makes it drag on. 75% of the game climbing 20% is video and 5% is hunting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cabela's Alaskan Identity Crisis Review November 1, 2011
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii|Edition:Standard
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
It's Cabela's Survival of Katmai, starring Lara Croft:Tomb Raider in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

This game has a serious case of identity crisis, and I can't be happier with that. Katmai continues the Cabela's tradition of having you hunt stuff down with guns, only now you are stranded in Alaska, searching for a lost Doctor (who had you fly her out here in the middle of a storm why?), encountering Eskimo shaman soldiers (no fooling) and you have a companion, a dog! And you are in third person.

In all seriousness, this game has a great premise. You are charged with surviving by hunting for food, seeking shelter, starting fires, digging for resources, scaling cliffs, and of course, shooting the daylights out of anything furry. All these elements are very straightforward, and are tied to the press of one button, such as pressing minus to dig(tap to dig faster) and interact with objects, C to climb and jump, Z to drop from ledges, B trigger to shoot, A to activate bullet time, shake the wii mote to reload. Aim with it, too. 1 opens your inventory, where you point at and click what weapons you want. Simple. And it works, though simplified it may be.

Story is simple so far; we play as a pilot with questionable ethics taking a doctor to an outpost in Alaska. She carries mysterious cargo of some importance. There's a storm, you crash, she falls off a mountain. You go after her, meet some old dude on the way. Borrow his dog and hunt some stuff while searching for her. I don't think it has to be Shakespeare. Probably better that way.

I am only a little way into the game. It has presented me with each new idea (shoot, climb, jump, etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars this game is horrible January 10, 2012
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii|Edition:Standard
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
You know, last years was so much better. It took me a month to do the story mode. But this year it took me 5 days to do it. The game is more climbing than anything. when you hunt you only shoot wolves, crows, bears, and some ugly skunk bear that dies from 3 shots and falls off a cliff. I can't believe it took only 3 shots. If next years game is that horrible I will never buy anything Cabelas again.

A Good Game. A little difficult and confusing in the offset and a little too short. But a good game none the less.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea-Not much after that.
This game took 4 hours. The controls (four buttons) are fickle. The writing is elementary and predictable. The story mode is inconclusive. The cover of the game is awesome. Read more
