Book Description

September 15, 2001
In 1961, Dick Cabela—with his wife, Mary, and his brother, Jim—turned his kitchen table into the foundation of what would become one of the world's top outfitting companies. The origins of this successful business are traced from Dick's bout with polio to his deep love of fishing and hunting that would inspire him. From one small ad in the back of the Casper Tribune to an annual mailing of 60 million catalogs, Cabela's has served the needs of two generations of outdoor enthusiasts while remaining, at heart, a family business.

More About the Author

Sometimes your path chooses you as much as you choose it.

Writing and the outdoors. For David Cabela these two passions are interconnected. Anyone who has ever spent time around a campfire knows that anglers and hunters are storytellers. It`s a tradition passed down since the beginning of human existence--sharing the excitement, heartache, and satisfaction of adventure.

From the first time David followed his father toward the river with his Crossman BB gun, he knew he would never satiate an innate need to be a part of the natural world. And from the first time he read an old Tarzan comic book as a boy, he wanted to tell stories.

Eventually, he discovered the greats of outdoor literature--Ruark, Hemingway, Capstick, and others. And he remembers thinking that if he could make the reader feel the way those writers did, if he could capture, with words, the way he felt in the outdoors, then he would have accomplished something worthwhile. After receiving an English degree from the University of Nebraska, he immersed myself in the two worlds that inspired him the most.

When he was not hunting or fishing, he was writing. And he still believes that if he can inspire one person to pursue the adventures in their hearts--whether a safari in Botswana or the next great American novel--then he can call himself a success. The day he fails to see himself as an aspiring writer and outdoorsman or feel improvement no longer matters, is the day he quits writing or hunting.

When you combine freedom and hard work, the possibilities are endless--that fact amazes David every day. He is the author of three books: "Cabela's - World's Foremost Outfitter," "Two Hearts, One Passion - Dick and Mary Cabela's Hunting Chronicles," and "Two Hearts in Tanzania - Dick and Mary Cabela's Hunting Chronicles II" as well as co-author of "BEAST - The Collected Works of John Banovich." His work has appeared in the anthology "Africa" as well as outdoor publications such as "Sporting Classics," "Sports Afield," "Outfitter Journal," and "Texas Sporting Journal." He is blessed with a loving wife, Shari, and three children, Hailey, Alex, and Taylor--they continually give him new inspiration and never fail to remind him of what really matters.

Aim true. Breathe. Follow through.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but incredibly repetitive, July 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Cabela's: World's Foremost Outfitter: A History (Hardcover)
I was looking forward to reading this book since I am a loyal customer of Cabela's. While David Cabela had the best of intentions in documenting the rise of his parents' company, he should have left the writing to the experts. That is not to say this book does not have some useful and interesting content. However, I believe the book could have been cut by 2/3 easily and been more interesting and effective.
